Description YAY! It's Death in all his Photoshopped glory!

Yesh! So the image that I've been working one for so very, very long is finally up! I hope it's up to your expectations!

What can I say? I've spent too many hours working on this, since was the first digital paintind I ever started doing. I really enjoyed working on it - one might say it worked a little bit as therapy for me, as events have left me a little bit changed.

Anyway, the obvious inspriation would be Death, the Grim Reaper, La Morte. My depiction of him is very much how I see him whenever reading any book upon the subject, though he's a slightly more realistic version than the Pratchett version in my head. As you can see he's (it's?) holding an hourglass. The concept behind this I've borrowed from Pratchett (who probably borrowed it from somewhere else) - it's a lifetimer. Everybody's got one and it tells Death how much time you have been given. When the sand runs out he comes for you and takes you to wherever you thought you would be going.

I've spent numerous hours on this - I can't honestly guess a number in fear for it being incorrect. It's taught me a great deal, about colours, about painting in Photoshop, shadows, light and reflection and it's given me a lot of inspiration to do some real painting.

Please tell me if the colours are off or anything. My screen is apparently very good compared to some others. I've tried editing it so that it will be viewable for you all. Let me know if it's not so that I can fix it.

Hopefully, if all goes as I wish, I will have a print up too!

Of course, I need to thank *AlaskanExile , :devsiwdom-of-trees: and especially *MeliHitchcock !

Description isn't exactly part of the art so you don't have to comment on it. Some peoplewould of course complain if there was no description at all.

lol! Again, I was inspired by Mort by Terry Pratchett, and events in my family which had left us all sorrowed and I used this "painting" as therapy. It helped me get to grips with certain things. You should really read Mort though as it's one of the few books that has made me think and laugh out loud at the same time.

That is right - this is Grim Reaper in all his glory! Death is one of the most important "characters" in Castlevania too, so as fan of the series I can only say - this one is great!

lol! Yeah, I read about him in Castlevania. I love everything about Death, as a character that is. Have you read any of the books concerning Death by Terry Pratchett? Mort's a killer.

lol! Sorry the pun.

I've heard those very same words "Glad you had that effect" many times, so it doesn't sound wierd to me at all .

I'm glad you enjoyed making that picture because it'll be insentive for you to make more .

You took all that time and energy to draw and later publish it online...It'd be a crime not to fav it

maybe a tad after everyone else, while since ive been here, but i really liked the hourglass. Im mostly just sad that the picture is a tad to dark to put on msn xP

The only thing i find a bit strange is the way he holds the scythe, but then again its death, he is supposed to be a bit weird that way.

btw, i tried just hiding the hourglass, then it just looks like a standard drawing, also the hourglass worked as a source of light in a otherwise dark and "hard to see anything" picture

gj ^^

Odgit In reply to Odgit [2006-11-16 17:19:25 +0000 UTC]

well ive kinde held a scythe when i was younger, and even though i was not exactly what i would call a "strong" kid i still remember scythes as beeing very heavy in the big bladed end. Basicly the intention was that when you actually swinged the thing it had so much momentum or something you could cut down a lot of grass/wheat whatev. at once.

To be short, a scythe is damn heavy in one end, not so much the other.

That's why (i think) most pictures of people holding scythes with 1 hand the scythe is resting one end on the ground. While Death here is holding it elevated with 1 hand. And well.. it just looks a tad weird in my eyes. But to be honest, few people ever held a scythe, and actually resting the damn thing on the ground or something to balance it would well... ruin the picture. It just looks like he is holding something which is about to fall, perfectly still, kinda annoyed me.

To cut it short, it looks a tad heavy to be holding that way, but i have seen several people hold it perfectly still etc. so its mostly just me. But as i said, it's death, he is paranormal etc, if he wants to hold it that way, he can xD

Better late than never...

I'm glad you like it. I'm sorry about the picture being dark. My screen is only a year old and the gamma-setting is a lot stronger than that of older screens (it has been calibrated too).

I can't see what you mean by the way he holds the scythe... Care to fill me in?

Great work, the painting and illumination is very impressive!
As for constructive critiques, I think that *AlaskanExile and ~Dianae 's comments sum it all.
Still, it's a very good artwork.

Hi, thanks for your note
Nice painting though some parts could be improved IMO : I think that it would work better if the lower part of the image was much darker, so the lantern could glow more and create a more surreal atmosphere. You could also change the perspective a little bit to make the Reaper look more menacing (taking a lower angle so it would look taller). Just some ideas.
Great work on the expression and nice colours!

muss say that I'm very impressed by the painting... but not too much by the drawing. It
seems a little "conservative", (I dont speak english very well)... Something is missing but
I still think its brilliant. Please dont hurt me! anyway... I was thinking... could I send u a
for u to paint it? just if possible, I would be very thankfull. keep it up man!

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

MisterIngo In reply to DERfrankREICH [2006-09-03 19:00:33 +0000 UTC]

Death, or the image of The Grim Reaper, is conservative. It's a personifiaction of Death, which is very hard not to draw in a stereotypic fashion. I don't quite understand what you are referring to and what you would have liked changed.. But no worries! I won't hurt you!

I'm not sure I can promis that I can paint your painting for you, but I would very much like to see it! Why don't you upload it to your gallery, or scraps and send me a note when you've done so! I'd like to see your version, how you like Death to be. If I do paint it however, I will of course ask your permission first, mention it in my description, and give you as a source for inspiration.

I'm glad you like the art! It means a lot to me. Again, please upload your drawing - I'd like to see it! I'm not going to change anything on this one, but I might do it over, once I've drawn a few more of Death. Perhaps you will inspire me then?

An old story from a Bookworm magazine issue that came out long time ago and isn't being published long time now.

Ok, the story:
The main character is a young woman, who goes dancing on the day her mother is about to die. When she comes back, she pumps on an cloaced man with a candle in his hand. She doesn't think much about it and goes for her mother, who she sadly finds has died when she was away. She relizes almost too late, who the man with the candle was, but still runs after him, hoping to catch the man. She follows him to a dark garden that surrounds a black lake. She gets to him just a moment before he enters the lake, just a moment before he enters the waters to kill the candle. She grabbs the candle and runs back, ruing the last of her beautiful dress and shoes. She manages to get back, but bearly before the candle dies.

This figure, who took the candle from the house has always hunted me in my mind. I never thought I'd see it in real.
