Description Welcome to Back to the Roots, a Wings of Fire story, where you the readers get a voice in the story’s progression.

Here you follow a dragonet named Peacemaker and a spirit that haunts him known as Darkstalker. The siblings' original plan was to join Jade Mountain Academy, but their stay gets a lot more complicated when a mysterious scavenger cult interferes, serving an ancient and powerful creature that seeks to end all magic…

How it works: At the end of every chapter there’s a selection of choices you can take, and a vote will take place where every reader gets to vote on how to continue the story.

There are however a few things to keep in mind:

   • Every action you take will consume 1 or more energy. If your energy runs low you will need to rest or you’ll risk fainting and losing Health.
• Magic is a powerful tool but of limited usage. It regenerates slowly, and can damage or even break your sanity and soul should it drop to low.
• It’s always good to have allies. If you get stuck you can always switch to the point of view of a different ally allowing you to take on the story from a different angle.
• The threat levels dedicate to the proximity of the story's antagonist, an ancient creature known as the Eradicator, which seeks to destroy all magic.
• Your health shall never fall to 0, otherwise, the story ends.

Good luck in your adventure and guide Peacemaker well.

Story

[Around 2000 years ago]

Fathom looked nervously out of the cave into the stormy night outside. A thick heavy chain lay ready in his talons.

The raindrops hitting the ground above him were the only sound that reached his ears. While he wasn’t getting wet he still would have preferred that over the situation he was in right now, and by a lot. Everything but sitting around inside a cave waiting for the trap to trigger… with him as bait.

When would it show up? Normally it would‘ve already been here… or was it just playing with him?

Fathom kept his eyes on the cave entrance. He didn’t know a lot about the creature that hunted him, but one thing he knew for certain. Magic was the reason why it was in this world, and magic was also what it seeked to wipe from said world.

In this case by killing him. He had always thought the danger of having magic was growing corrupt to it, but the world had been so cruel to happily show him that there were things far more dangerous. He flinched when he spotted a triangular glowing eye outside the cave. A blink later it was gone again. Paranoia or reality? He didn’t know anymore.

His grip tightened around the thick chain in his talons. Magic was useless against the beast that was hunting him. He tried many things before, but it had done nothing more than to slow it down for a few seconds. In fact, enchanted items seemed to become weaker when the monster touched them, when comparing them towards their unenchanted counterparts.

He looked once again at the chain in his talons. A non enchanted solid piece of metal hardware crafted by one of the best blacksmiths in Pyrrhia.

His only hope of possibly stopping the thing hunting him. It couldn’t be enchanted, and as far as he knew there was no way of effectively killing it… but you could trap it.

At last, that’s what he hoped.

He flinched when he felt a wing brushing his, but then relaxed when he realized who it belonged to.

“We will get through this.“ Indigo said with a reassuring smile. “We survived worse“

“I wish I could say the same with the same confidence…“ he mumbled, although he felt a little better now, remember that he still had her, and could always rely on that… well if she survived this… DON‘T THINK LIKE THAT! “It’s just…“

Suddenly a bolt of especially bright lightning struck outside blinding him temporarily. The thunder followed half a second later.

He blinked startled, trying to get the light spots out of his eyes, his ears ringing. They went away one after the other, but curiously enough one stayed. He could hear a startled gasp from Indigo next to him. He blinked again, but it was still there, a triangular glowing light…

He paused, no, not light, eye! A triangular glowing eye was staring right at him from only a few meters away. A spearpoint was was aimed at the eye, but it didn’t even blink.

His heart froze. It was here. Why did it have to show up the split second they had been blinded? He didn’t bother replying to himself. It knew. It had taken him a while to accept this fact, but it knew. This creature was intelligent, far more intelligent than most would’ve ever imagined a creature that wasn’t a dragon could be. If it weren’t for Indigo stepping in, the second of confusion would’ve meant his death.

The creature took a single step forward with one of its spider-like legs, causing Indigo to tense, gripping her spear tighter.

Strangely enough it only had three of them, arranged in a triangular position. The rest of its body wasn’t any less disturbing. Its lower resembled like someone had glued 3 legs in a circle to a flat round stone. Its upper body had no better way of describing it than a round flat head with a triangular eye on its forehead. The eye seemed to be bioluminescent and also the only facial feature it possessed. No nose, no ears, no mouth were visible. Just a flat surface of some kind of insect-like chitin. Minor scars covered it’s hide, a testimony to the countless animus it had battled and slayed.

Fathom silently wondered if he would be added to that list today.

The worst part however wasn’t its dark gray carapace that covered almost its entire body and had stubbornly resisted penetration of every weapon he or Indigo had thrown at it, but the blades at the end of its arms, starting approximately at its elbow, long enough that they could be used to walk on.

It were those blades that had been used to kill every other animus born over the last few years and had almost killed him far more often than he liked to recall. They were completely black and seemed to absorb the light itself, resulting in him only being able to see the deathly limbs when they were briefly illuminated by the flashes of lightning that appeared every once in a while.

His eyes started to hurt as he was too afraid to blink as he knew that the creature would attack the moment he did. His talons once again ran over the chain in his talons. They were from solid steel, the only material the creature seemed to have problems breaking through. If they could chain it up with these, they might be able to win this fight once and for all.

He felt Indigo‘s wing brushing his again, and at last some bit of confidence returned to him.

Like on command the two SeaWings simultaneously charged their opponent. The creature on the other hand simply stood there, patiently watching them approach.

Then in the blink of an eye, it moved…

No choices can be made in the prologue.

You can however leave ideas now or in later chapters.
