Description Imaginative title, non??
It's been a long time since I last did a golden dragon...this one has taken me about 3 days, on and off. I'd like to add a background to it, but.... *grins* I know my limitations! (I now have to go off and buy a whole new set of yellow pencils... )

This dragon looks eerily familiar to me, perhaps just because it is the golden type. I like it's horns a lot. I think a good background would really bring this peice together though. It just seems to be missing something.

Familiar....I do have an elfwood gallery, and it's posted there as well, but apart from that, I don't know! I think it is possibly because my dragons do tend to be terribly 'traditional'... this was drawn as part of a D&D campaign, so I used their basic description (apart from the horns...I love designing head carriages for dragons!). As for backgrounds...they really are the bane of my life. I would dearly love to put in a background, but I am just so worried about mucking them up - I kind of have a 'background phobia'!

Yeah I have a background phobia myself. I never know where to start on the damn things and usually just end up sticking with a figure. Makes attempting a dynamic picture a real pain in the butt.

Thank you! I tend to use that pose a lot when I'm sketching...it's almost like a '...and what do *you* want, lttle mage...' kind of pose

This is superb. You've given the dragon such a majesty and sense of dignity. Lovely colors, vibrant and rich.

Thank you very much! I wanted to portray dragons as a source of wisdom and majesty, rather than just being darn great lizards with huge great big teeth... *impish grin* *(Still...I wouldn't nick his treasure!)

But I've been working on this one for about 15 - 20 hours in total...even if he was crap, HE WAS GOING ON HERE ANYWAY!!! Now I just need to sort out a background *looks horrified at the thought*. Ummm...maybe not...

Thank you! I actually think I suck at colouring...I have this horrible habit of using too much colour and blistering the paper etc...but this one turned out OK!!

One of the reasons I love drawing dragons is that I get to design horns. Sad but true, I'm afraid!! Dragons have *gotta* have big old headgear, don't they??

oh wow that;s nice. Maybe, if you don't mind, you could give me some tip...?

Mistresselysia In reply to Shilili [2004-03-27 18:46:31 +0000 UTC]

No problem! I actually learnt to draw dragons by drawing horses first...it helps to start small, with as little 'ornamentation' (like horns and stuff) as possible. Once you've got a body / head shape you're happy with, go nuts! Other points of reference for me were bats (mainly for wings), Pterosaurs and cats. Do the 'circles joined up with lines' thing (since I have no art training at all, I have no idea what it's actually called, but I'm sure it's a proper 'method') to get the proportions right.

Hope this helps...if you want any other tips, just email me and I'll send you a step-by-step thing of how I learnt to draw them!
