The framing, composition and lighting is good but the technology of the software has been overtaken by newer things. Vue 6/7 and Terragen 2 have much better lighting models. You can try Vue Pioneer as freeware. Always use Renderosity lighting models - regardless of long rendering times they produce amazingly more realistic results than simpler lighting systems, especially with landscapes. Best wishes!

As a matter of fact, this was made back before Terragen 2 or Vue 7. But I'm still using plain old Terragen because it still produces good pieces. If you look at photographs from way up north you can see scenes that could be duplicated with Terragen. Guitarists don't throw away their acoustic guitars just because an electric suddenly becomes available, do they?

I am planning to upgrade, however, as soon as I get my main computer fixed. It's a lot more powerful than this older one that I'm using now. All I need is a new motherboard, but money is tight right now. This old thing could run Vue 7 or Terragen 2 but the renders would take forever, and my husband uses this computer too. As it is, I can set up Terragen to render a scene when I go to bed and when he gets up all he has to do is save it for me. If it were Vue or Terragen 2, it would be hours yet before it finished and would hog the its resources so much that he wouldn't be able to use the computer.

Oh, and thanks for the tip on Renderosity!

True, true. My only point is more modern software uses more realistic lighting models. You'll be able to see the difference with this sort of scene in more cutting edge software to do with the creases in valleys being darker than mountain tops. Indeed Terragen can do some killer snow-peaks. Radiosity spends some pre-render time shooting theoretical photons from the sun and bouncing them off surfaces to light crevices and dark areas realisticly and Ambient Occlusion (also known as Global Illumination or Final Gather) modifies ambient light to be darker where the sky (where light comes from if it's not from the sun) is less visible due to landscape or plants cutting it off. Again, crevices and overhangs get darker while peak tops and plant tips are lighter. That kind of lighting wasn't available when Terragen or a variety of other software was around a few year ago (I cut my 3D teeth on freeware Amiga software in the 90s, ten of which and a game or two fitted on a floppy disk!). To get down to it, this scene lacks ambient occlusion, Radiosity and other ambient lighting techniques which, trust me, will revolutionise the way you look at lighting and scenes. It is a good image but you will be able to re-render it in the future with better technology and make an image that knocks people's socks off.
