"You're perfect"(no I'm not.
I reflect too much,
Dream too much,
Don't do enough.
I'm lazy and preoccupied
Or its euphemism, "contemplative"
My voice cracks and
I bruise easily.
I'm clumsy.
I'm either too quiet
Or too loud.
I'm argumentative and judgmental
Where I have no business being so.
I'm late, and I easily
Forget deadlines.
When I'm angry I'm
A bitch of the first rate)
"You're intelligent"
(some days I forget
How to count.
I get C's and D's
Back on my assignments
Like everyone else.
I read "trashy" fiction.
I can detect symbolism but
It takes me a while to
Figure out what
It means.
I watch too many movies
And too many shows.
I memorize things I have
No business memorizing
Or dwelling one:
Lines,
Lyrics,
Dates of death and marriage
We never learn in history
Instead of my French conjugations)
"You're pretty"
(I have a pointy face
And a crooked smile-
Not crooked in a cute way,
But crooked in a jack-o-lantern way.
When I'm pissed my lips
Get thin and white and sullen.
I'm either too ghostly pale
Or rozacea flushed.
I'm thin in all the
Wrong places,
Fat in all the wrong places.
My feet are too big
And my eyes are too small
And my hair is a mess)
"You're talented"
(I write because I
Read and want
To be part of that,
The words only come
From my bleeding heart
And human curiosity,
Not talent.
I sing well because
I take lessons from
A master.
I relate to people
Because they always want
To talk to me
Because they know
I'm not busy)
I hurt people
Bore people
frustrate, infuriate
Them.
Premature words escape
My mouth.
I make mistakes
And sometimes
Never fix them.
So why?
Why
Do you
Love me?
How can you?
