Description Bernard from DreamWorks' Megamind.

Bernard is a character that I didn't particularly care for initially in regards to design, but after watching the film a few times he's kinda rubbed off on me as pretty appealing, and, subsequently, I stayed up until 1:00 AM last night conjuring a bunch of sketches of him. They're not perfect, but I like how a couple of them came out, this one included (which I'll probably color later).

Note: A screen shot was used as a reference.

BERNARD!!!! lD

is it wrong that the first thing I thought when the movie ended was "WHAT ABOUT BERNARD???!?!?" and then the credits happily obliged and answered my question for me. MOVIES CAN READ MY MIND NOW!!!!!!!!!

anywho...love the sketch...I think coloring this is a must

Woo!!

Nuh-uh. Not at all. Poor guy was in his pocket the whole time before getting tossed in the washer and subsequently smacked with a bat. The real Bernard wasn't nearly as appealing as the Megamind-Bernard, but still.

Thanks, dude! It probably won't get colored, but I may eat those words. (snigger)

I prefered this over the detailed reference. Sometimes I find when I'm doodling in class, I produce better work than when I sit down and draw it carefully at my room table. Maybe the mind works better when it's idle?

Anyway, keep playing fast and loose. Most of the sketches by concept artists are very light and expressionistic, and if you've done gesture drawings, it's about capturing the essence. I really love the confused/apprehensive expression you gave him here, it tells a story, as opposed to the detailed sketch which is kinda boring.

This might sound a lot from a guy whose characters look 'stiff', but I'm working on it! And so are you too!

Agreed. Over-thinking the sketching process may also contribute to a less-than-stellar composition as opposed to a quickly drawn one where simply placing down the basic shapes results in a more accurate depiction of the subject being referenced.

Very true. I have done gesture drawings before and enjoyed it immensely. It's a technique I should adopt once again.

Thank you very much for your input, namely the critique given. In all honesty, I thirst for more comments of this nature, so when it's given I inhale it. Much obliged!

This looks awesome. I loved his design in the movie (because every superhero movie needs a nerd. It's an unwritten rule).

This looks really good! I liked this character a lot, and his design is just great. I really enjoy drawing him, though the hair is kinda tricky
What screenshot did you used for this one??

Thanks!

Mmm. Yeah, the hair can get a little tricky sometimes, but it's fun to draw.

The screen shot I used was one during the part where Bernard and Roxie are having dinner at a formal restaurant. Right before Roxie enters the scene, Bernard quickly relights a candle with a special gun of his while checking to make sure that no one is looking. One of the frames is this one, right after he lights the candle, I believe. When selecting screen shots, I tend to go for the unusual ones -- shots that people normally don't remember or are difficult to catch, but that look interesting (to me, at least).

Thanks for the kind comment!
