Description Some of this is fan art... of fan fiction. Yeah, I went there. Read this story and you'll see where I got the inspiration for drawing Shen as a youngster:

Apparently, I like Lord Shen more than I thought. I was actually reading fan fiction, which is... highly unusual. Nevertheless, I found a couple of particularly touching and bittersweet stories, one of which can be found via the link above, and was thoroughly enjoying myself both reading them and then creating fan art.

That one story, "Life and Times", is particularly touching. It's easy to envision Shen growing up in such an environment and in such a predicament. I especially like how the author kept him mute for several years -- it's believable and ties in well with the overall personality of the character. Give it a read if you like Lord Shen and if you don't mind fan fiction.

I squealed super loud when I saw this! (Glad my mom wasn't in the next room; she would have given me a funny look) I love Shen, especially the way the author portrays him as a child in The Life and Times.

Ha-ha! Yes, Shen is undoubtedly one of the most awesome characters that DreamWorks has ever created. And I'm with you on that "Life and Times" series -- the author did a great job.

Agreed. That piece of fan fiction ties in well with the character's personality and would have fit in nicely in the actual film. Perhaps they didn't want to duplicate Tai Lung's story, in a way, but I do agree with you in that it should have been in there. It would have helped the audience to sympathize with the character more.

I saw you posting several examples of fanfics on Twitter (well, this one and 'Vengeful Love', actually). If there's any more you know, I'd love to read... I think I'm on a KFP2 roll now.

But yeah, back to this piece, you've done the fanfic justice. I like how you envisioned his youthful self, with the round head and smaller body. He looks cute with his oversized palace robes, but you can sort of sense the seeds of hatred growing within him, especially in the bottom left and right pictures.

And the "Father" one is so heartbreaking, you can practically see his thirst for love, which is sadly unrequited.

Have you sent the author a link to this? I think she'd love to know you were inspired by her. Also, I take it you drew this with your Cintiq? I can never sketch with my tablet... it's like trying to paint with a mop!

Anyhoo, keep up the good work, I'd love to see you draw the Furious Five (I'm a fan of Master Viper) or any of the other characters, though I'd also like more of Shen. One of Dreamworks' most captivating villains.

Actually, the author found me first before I could send her a link. Surprisingly, she really likes the drawings. I was flat out flattered.

Yup. This was drawn on my dad's Cintiq in Photoshop CS3. The tablets are things I can't work with either, so I'm with you there!

Hmmm. Yes, I should tackle the Furious Five at some point. I've attempted Tigress and Viper before, but they've never turned out that good. Rest assured that you will see a joint effort to draw Tigress at some point, though -- my mom and I are going to compose something special for one of my doctors. As for Lord Shen, you'll definitely see more of him.

I've read the story! I really loved how Lord Shen's past was written!
It's such an incredible& inspiring fanfic!
No doubt about it, one of the stories that ever touched me so much. <333
If Kung Fu Panda 3 is made, I would wish for Shen to be at least alive from the cannon incident and tell his backstory, IF POSSIBLE, cause everyone is quite interested with the evil Albino.
