Description It's Phil from Hercules!

Both of these were tests to see if I could accomplish two separate goals. The sketch on the left was done to see if I could nail a specific pose and expression without using a screenshot that looked exactly like it, although I will admit that I originally looked for a shot that looked... just like it. Ha. I found one that was pretty close, so I took it and tweaked it a bit. Unfortunately, the end result turned out to be a little bit "flat", as my mom said, so I tried again, which brings us to... the second one! The sketch on the right was done to see if I could altogether make the drawing more three-dimensional without erasing at all. Hopefully, I accomplished this goal. My mom said that it looked better, anyway.

One goal that I did not accomplish was that of nailing the anatomy. It's off in a few places. If you look at this image (which I used as a reference when composing the second sketch) and compare it to that of my drawing, you can pinpoint the mistakes: [link]

The drawing on the right was done with a 0.5 mm P205 Pentel mechanical pencil. I actually really like working with mechanical pencils, so why I don't have one of my own (or hardly ever use them in general) is a mystery.

Phil is a character who I'd wanted to draw ages ago, but I didn't feel like I had the skill set to do it until recently, and even then there is definitely room for improvement. Practice makes perfect!
Unless I am very much mistaken, Phil was animated by Eric Goldberg. I love how he handled the character -- how playful the mouth shapes are, various walks and struts that define his personality, humorous expressions, and other aspects.
On a slightly different note, and in regards to the sketch on right, the reason why I picked that particular image is because that is my favorite human/character expression out of any other. I've always loved it, for some reason. Heh.

One last funny thing: Last night, a friend of mine said that I'm nuts for being so hard on my artistic capabilities, and the very next morning my mom told me to quit being so down on myself in regards to art. I thought that this was kinda funny, but I'll try to take their advice and stop complaining so much. (snigger)

All right. Enough rambling! I hope that you enjoy the sketches.

Meh, I don't the anatomy is such a huge deal when you're working with a figure like Phil -- you've got the essential relationship between his component parts right. More important to me is the characterization and the feeling evoked by the expression, and you're right, the second is a bit more Phil-ish.

It's nice to see you experimenting like this! I like seeing artists test themselves.

Yeah, the designs in that film are, in general, pretty stylized. However, it was the "relationship between the component parts", as you mentioned, that I was trying to nail, and I think that I did screw it up in several places. I concur with you, though: Expression and characterization are equally important, if not more so, and both were definitely felt in all the characters in Hercules.

Thank you very much for your input! I really appreciate it.

Nicely done! The drawing on the right is my favorite. It's more three-dimensional and has a nice energy about it.

And your friend and mom are right, you have some great artistic skillZ Don't be so hard on yourself.

Thank you very much, Hannah!

I'm glad that you find the one on the right to be more three-dimensional, because that's what I was going for. Mission accomplished!

"SkillZ"... with a capital 'Z'! Heheh. Yep, you guys are right. I shouldn't be so down on myself. Gotta work on that.

Thanks a bunch, dude!
