Thanks everyone much appreciated. Dom, this is done at night so an ND would not help me that much. I've experimented with ND's and lightning during the day with mixed results, the ND often screws around with the sensor catching the strike, why? I don't know for sure but it does.

Hi Mitch, what would happen if you used a strong ND filter and leave the shutter open for a long time like half an hour or so? have you tried something like this? What's your usual exposure time?
