Paths of the Dead, a series of underground passageways leading beneath the White Mountains from Firienfeld, the meadow above Dunhar-Row, to Erech, a hill in Gondor.
The Paths are entered via an arched doorway known simply as the Door, or the Dark Door. The mysterious figures that are carved above the arched entrance add to the almost palpable sense of fear that affects all those who approach it. For many years, the Paths were haunted by dead men, usually known as the Sleepless Dead, the Grey Host, or the Shadow Host. Grey, shadowy figures, they moved silently on foot and on horseback through the passageways, their only discernible features their glowing eyes.
The Sleepless Dead, who haunted the paths and heights of Dunharrow throughout the Third Age of Middle-earth, were the original inhabitants of the mountains. They broke an oath to Isildur, High King of Arnor and Gondor, that they would aid him in his battle against the evil Sauron, who threatened the very existence of Middle-earth. In anger he cursed them, saying that they would know no rest until the day they were called upon to fulfill their oath...
