I usually just leave Hector to defend Merlinus. It just seemed better, since I played for a while with him at he front lines, then found him at level 20 sooner than I expected.

actually i don't, i usually just send a small "attack force" to head for the mission goal and leave the rest behind (worst...tactician...ever)
