This is my cosplay of Asagi, vocalist of visual kei band D, "Ouka Saki Some Ni Keri" outfit, debuted at CTcon 2011 and worn briefly at Katsucon 2012

Everything except the fan is handmade by me. I dyed and painted the whole kimono, set all the eyelets, styled the wig, etc.

Oh my gosh! I ADORE your Asagi cosplay so much!! Seriously this is such a great job! May I ask what resources/references you used to dye/paint the kimono? ^__^

Thank you!! ^^ Here are some of the reference photos I used for my cosplay that I still had saved on my computer:  s298.photobucket.com/user/Fird…
The materials I used were all pretty basic:  good old Rit dye (I had to dye it twice though to get the colors dark enough) and fabric paint.  I cut out some stencils for the flowers for the sake of time, and everything else was free-handed.  I'm actually amazed that it came out as well as it did.  I feared it would end up looking like a craft project but most people I ran into were shocked to find out that it was painted on.
Come to think of it, I actually have WIP photos from when I was dyeing/painting the kimono.  Here is a link to that: s298.photobucket.com/user/Fird…
I outlined the parts that I wanted to dye black with masking tape and then scrunched up all the parts I wanted to stay red with clothes pins.

Your so very welcome! I adore Asagi and his outfits so much and you made my day with doing this one!
Ah that seems like so much work! But it just came out beautifully~
How long in total did this take you to make? And I would of thought the same thing to!
From what I can see it does not look like it was all painted on, that's for sure.
Would you mind if I used your reference and WIP photos? I am in the process of getting together ideas
for a few cosplays and I want to try a few of Asagi's costumes, including this one ^__^

Thanks again, I'm so glad you like it!
I made the whole costume in one week, but one loooong torturous week.  I only had around an hour of sleep each night.  Realistically it's doable in 2-3 weeks.  80% of that time was spent painting.
Absolutely, use whatever you need.  Asagi has so many great costumes to chose from and it's always great to see vk cosplayers.  If you end up making this one, feel free to ask any other questions.

That's not too bad. I mean, length in time anyways haha
But that's so much work to get done in one week! Amazing~
Did you use a certain pattern to make this?
And what about the hair? How did you go about doing that? ^__^
Thanks! I really would love doing this one this summer. And
then a few of the "simpler" (if you can say that about his costumes haha)
costumes. But I guess I shall see after this one~

Yeah I think I still have ptsd from that week haha.  Never again.
I didn't buy a pattern, but it's really easy to draft your own since it's all rectangular pieces.  I did some google research to find the most authentic way to make a furisode kimono, and there are some websites that have step-by-step instructions.  If I recall correctly I think the obi was 12 feet long (or possibly 15? I sold the costume so I can't verify the measurements).  If you research oiran-style obis, which are extra long and hang down in the front, you can probably find the right measurement.  I would recommend finding a stiffer fabric for the obi. Japanese obi are made out of a particular kind of silk that's hard to find over here, and "normal" silk or satin is too slippery.  I had a tough time getting the obi to hold it's shape and stay tied.
Wig:  I used extensions for all of the sculpted parts on top of the head (otherwise, there is not nearly enough hair in one wig).  I wrapped the hair around black felting wool to give it shape and used a ton of freeze spray and bobby pins to hold it all together.  It was a lot of trial and error.
Haha yes, "simpler" is all relative when talking about D costumes, but that's great! I hope everything works out for you~

That's too bad, you look absolutely stunning. I hope you'll go to another con near me. I sadly don't go to too many living in expensive NYC X_X; i am planning Kisaki cosplay at some point this year.
