well, for one they're transparent watercolors
so what you do is paint water for the section you want to color, so it doesn't bleed into the other colors, then you put the paint in the area you put water on. so i guess that's really it

i ordered mine off amazon (the brand i bought was art advantage)but you can get them at any art supplies store i'm sure, like Michaels. watercolors aren't that expensive, but if you want something cheaper you can try watercolor pencils ^_^
