Description i have seemed to start losing my ability to draw things traditionally. there are a few nitpicks here and there.
this is my most ambitious OC yet. an AVATAR. she's been in my head for awhile, but unlike my other OCs, she existed without a proper face. it's only quite recently when i started to give her a face and personality.
please note that i am not claiming canonity of this character or her story. if ever Bryke proceeds to continue and complete the avatar cycle series.

Storyline:
*since Korra's time is around the 1920s, and assuming Korra will pass away in her 80s, then that makes the birth of the earth Avatar around 1980s-1990s of real world time. now, assuming that the earth Avatar would live until his 80s too, then that time is waaaaay in the future even in our world; around 2065! even if the earth Avatar dies younger than that, we still haven't reached those years, so who knows what the future is in store for us. So this all pure speculation on my part.*

Avatar Rani is a Fire Nation born Avatar who lives in a time (even before her birth) when the world was peaceful. That is, during the early years of her Avatar life…

her world may be peaceful but it was still out of balance. in a time of modernity and technology, the old ways almost completely disappear. People do not care anymore about tradition and concepts from a bygone era, which includes nature, spirits, and the Avatar itself (people acknowledge what the Avatar is, but unlike Avatars of the past, is only more of a figurehead or a Nation’s cultural ornament.)

then a big problem has greatly threatened the balance of the 4 nations; another person emerged who can apparently control all 4 elements just like the Avatar. To make matters worse, the ‘other’ Avatar is almost identical to Rani. she is determined to win the world’s favour, and has zealous believers and followers at her disposal.

The world is in turmoil and confusion, for it now has two Avatars, and everyone knows that for so very long, only one Avatar can exist at a time. People then began to turn hostile towards either Avatar they think is fake, and a huge world war amongst people of the 4 nations is currently brewing; a war between people of Rani’s side, and people of the ‘other’ Avatar’s side.

Rani, being calm and soft-hearted by nature, is unwillingly in a position where armies are ready to fight for her (without her saying so). How can she prove that she is the real Avatar without having blood be shed to do so? And how can she overcome her spiritual block to unlock the Avatar State, which is the greatest proof of her authenticity?

Character background:
Avatar Rani was born 85 years after the passing of Avatar Korra (and after her predecessor, the earth kingdom Avatar Yuji, another OC of mine but yet to have a design) into a quaint, middle class Fire Nation family in one of the nation's old towns. she was discovered to be the Avatar by the Fire Sages at an early age. not wanting to separate her from her family, the Sages and the White Lotus members set up a training camp specially for her in her hometown (it was since Korra's time that the Avatar's teachers would have to come to them instead of the other way around)

since the world was peaceful, Rani was leading an idyllic life until tragedy had struck; her parents died in an airship crash of suspicious circumstances when she was 12. now orphaned, she was taken in by her wealthy Uncle and Aunt and resides with them. she wasn't quite the same ever since. she promised herself as the Avatar, that she would master the Avatar State in order to meditate to the spirit world just to see her parents again.

Further facts:
- Despite Rani being a spiritual person, her spiritual block manifested after the demise of her parents. Since then, she wasn’t able to contact her past lives. (she actually contacted her past lives at an unusually early age before the incident)

- Rani favors waterbending more than firebending, her natural element, since she feels that waterbending makes her feel more like herself.

- Rani had a dragon animal guide whom she named Haku. It was a gift to her by the Sages after she completed her mastery of the 4 elements.

- She fears her powers and capabilities as the Avatar, even more so when a war is threatening to happen for her sake. Her fear and uncertainty about herself causes people to doubt her as the Avatar

- She upholds strict traditional values and teachings, and dresses in outdated fashion to exemplify this

- Later in her life, she adopts an orphaned street boy she picked up from the ruins of a village after a skirmish. She made him her son, and named him Ryu. He aspires to be a Fire Sage.

- A new study emerged decades after Avatar Korra; Avatarology (yeah, can you come up with a better name??). Scholars and scientists taking up Avatarology study the lives of the past avatars and even try to explain the Avatar’s origins from a scientific point of view. They also try to find an explanation on how the Avatar gets to bend 4 elements, and how the science of bending works. The biggest difficulty of a student of Avatarology is to acquire an actual Avatar to help with research.

- By her time, scientists already tamper with the natural order of things for the sake of science and research, thus performing experiments that are morally unacceptable

I actually had a similar idea to this in both character and setting. Nice to see someone actually wrote it down!

Damn this is pretty well thought out! I've recently made the Earth-born avatar as a sudden case of being bored, but I might go into it more  also the funny thing is that we both had the idea of the new Avatar being born between the 1980's/90's! XD

I think chances are that Korra could very well reach age 100.

Sorry for the double post btw, but, you're not the only fan who came up with the idea of an artificial Avatar.

I'm aware. and ever since the Vaaut/Raava thing from Book 2, it's actually possible now to get another avatar, though it won't be 'artificial' in a sense; just the evil opposite of the Avatar.

Engineered by humans = artificial.

yep, though after a lot of thinking, I kinda like the Vaatu/Raava route a lot more; makes me wish that were the storyline of the Fire Avatar in the last Avatar series of the whole franchise

yep, she will, and by that time, technology would be advanced enough to create an artificial avatar.

You are welcome By any chance do you happen to do art trades or things like that? And I would LOVE your opinion on an OC I have been working on for LOK too.

On the whole time line thing ... ATLA all take their clothing from the 16 or 1700s as are the steam powered ships ... so you could say Victorian time period ... then it jumps to the roaring 20s ... I think Bryan and Mike just like the fancy times when technology is on the verge of changing in a major way ... so each avatar falls into a different technological age regardless of how long they live.

Don't worry about losing your ability to draw traditionally. For it seems that I have lost the ability to draw all together.

Beautiful design, especially with the choice of clothing I think. Brilliant back story also. I always love an OC with a background to their life and personality. She's very unique too.

mizzizabellaSMS In reply to xlollx [2012-07-06 13:42:04 +0000 UTC]

it's because i'm so used to digital art. i find using a tablet more often can affect my drawing ability when it comes to using the pencil...

thank you. i was kinda worried about her story since there are still a lot of plotholes, and i cannot fully tell her 'Legend' since my ideas are very long. the conflict of the story was inspired from the chronicles of Narnia: The Last Battle, about the 'fake Aslan' and all

WildDragonFlying In reply to xlollx [2012-07-06 13:14:42 +0000 UTC]

I second this. I especially love the part about how she prefers bending water instead of fire. In the second episode of LoK(I think) Tenzin said something like Avatars most often have trouble mastering control of the element most opposite their *personality* not their natural born element. So, for Aang it was Earth, since he didn't *seriously* want to fight(i.e. stand his ground, which is what Earth is. Solidity.). For Korra, it was Air, since she's a more pugnacious type, and Air is peaceful. So if Rani is more of the peaceful, non-confrontational type, then it makes sense that she'd be more comfortable with Water, which moves and flows around any obstacle it faces, rather than fire, which tackles it head-on.

mizzizabellaSMS In reply to WildDragonFlying [2012-07-06 13:53:28 +0000 UTC]

yes, that's what i'm after here. i figured it'll be quite funny that if Korra, a water tribe Avatar, just loooves using firebending, then the Fire Nation Avatar would love to use waterbending.

you're right about the personality too; Korra was hot-headed and aggressive, so she uses firebending more, whereas Rani, is level-headed and patient, so she uses waterbending. but Rani is not as pacifist as Aang; Aang values life so much that he had no heart to kill the most dangerous megalomaniac of the Avatar world, whereas Rani may be a gentle Avatar, but when push comes to shove, she may get down and dirty, and do drastic measures to ensure world balance.

WildDragonFlying In reply to mizzizabellaSMS [2012-07-06 21:32:55 +0000 UTC]

Yea, and that's why I thought that she would still prefer water, the slightly-less-peaceful-than-air element. lol
