Behind the Wall: A Visual Story of China's Disappearing Villages

This series of photographs focuses on the Chinese governments attempts to hide the undesirable reality that modernity is destroying the ancestral homes of many indigenous people in developing cities. Billboards, stone walls and sometimes piles of rubble have been used to shield the view of these homes from passing traffic. Modern roads meet dirt streets at the entrances into neighborhoods that are still buzzing with a lifestyle that is intensely different from the urban landscape beyond the walls.

The walls around the villages in Chinese cities have evolved into large metal and canvas billboards that are used to advertise the upcoming developments that will take the place of ancestral villages. These billboards are nearly two stories high and make it almost impossible to see the people living behind them. They also cut off the village from the street and make getting out to the area on the other side very difficult.

Impact

Firstly, I love the effect of the picture. It leaves one shivering upon first sight at the destruction humans have wrecked upon the world they have created.

The empty looking house at the front-right of the photo appears deserted, giving the impression that the entier picture is about abandoned places, but upon taking a closer look, you can see the clothes hanging on a washline on the house behind it. This realization that the houses are inhabited raises incredible pathos in the viewer of the photo.

The feelings of sorrow and sympathy are then changed into anger when catching sight of the modernistic buildings at the background that create a heavy contrast with the sad deterioration of the buildings being photographed.

Overall this is a powerful photo capable of raising many emotional responses from its viewers.

Wow. This is an incredibly humbling critique of my work. Thank you for taking the time to express your feelings. I am glad that you saw in this image the elements that I was working to capture. The clothing lines and modern buildings were at the center of my thoughts and help to give a full understanding a walk through this village. Thank you again for your time and your mind.

Thank you so much for your thoughts!! In general these places are incredibly lonely with a sense of melancholy, but I have continually been surprised by the people that live here. They create plots of crops out of the footprints of demolished buildings, clean the streets, cook food, wash clothes, and welcome foreign photographers with the biggest smiles in all of China. I am glad that you enjoy the images and I hope to bring more to you and with any luck I can start to speak Chinese well enough to get into some homes and family events to show the joy that lives in these homes. Thank you again for your time and your thoughts. It does mean so much to me that you were able to enjoy these. If you have any questions or are interested in any images in China please let me know and I'll do my best to find and capture those places for you.

Yeah, that reminds me....
I've heard of "trash villages" in China that are filled to the brim with garbage and waste....
Anyway, the villagers you met are filled with hope, aren't they?
I hope you tell more people about how we have to help them through your wonderful photos.
