Description Prismacolor pencils on Canson colored art paper. This is drawing number eight in a commission series I am doing. Each drawing tells a part of a story devised by the client. Velma finds herself alone in a creepy old Victorian house and discovers a mystery of her own. The SKELETON KEY she has found is an important clue and will lead her deeper into the mysteries of the old house. More as it become available.

The look of this submission is very unique! There are soooo many people that totally rely on technology to do their work. It's extremely refreshing to see someone actually draw their art! Wonderful style and shading!

Yes, sadly we have a generation of youth who think art can only be done with the aid of a computer. Tis sad.

I suppose I'm one of the young ones that try to actually draw. I'd love to hear what you think of my work.

So what exactly has she been doing with Shaggy? She looks somewhat preggers. She also looks a little cattish. Kind of like in anime when a character has their mouth turn into a 3 on its back. Good pic though. I like the graveyard outside. That and the fact that Velma must be wearing a Wonder-bra. Those sweater puppies are huge.

Why would the baby have blonde hair and an orange kerchief? I thought Fred was gay.

LOL!
So you think Velma may be pregnant? I'll have to pick up the latest issue of the Coolsville Tattler next time I'm in the grocery store check out. I seem to recall that she was recently spotted at Sardie's with Johnny Bravo. Don't tell Daphne, but when that baby is born, he'll be sporting blonde hair and an orange kerchief if you get my meaning.
If you examine the original Hanna Barbera model sheets, Velma has a rather odd mouth shape, it peaks somewhat in the middle, and this angle on her face only reinforces that odd shape. I'm not very familiar with anime or Japanese comics, so if I have somehow referenced an Asian comic conceit it is completely by accident.

Remember, the man who designed her in the beginning, Iwao Tokamoto, is of Japanese decent. I'm sure his ethnic background influenced his design. I've also noticed that Daphne has slanted eyes, clearly an Oriential influence. (How many others have noticed this?)

That would be a good question to pose to Mr. Takamoto...just HOW influenced was he by Japanese comics and animation when he worked for HB. But when he worked at HB, the Japanese animation industry was but a few years old. But of course Japanese comics had been around for decades at that time.

Before Mr. Tokamoto came to HB, he was at Disney, where he worked on the classic Icabod and Mr. Toad cartoon (narrated by Bing Crosby, no less), among others. He came to HB to work on the Jetsons. His most recent job was as a consultant on the What's New Scooby-Doo series, and does some commentary for HB cartoon DVD for Warner Home Video releases. I believe he's slated to do commentary on the upcoming Scooby-Dynomutt DVD release.

Very interesting. I have a friend who actually met the man and received a sketch and autograph from him...BTW, the sketch was of Daphne! From the timeline you describe, it sounds like he was probably OUT of the loop with what was going on in Japanese animation in the early sixties. But I suppose he could have still been influenced by Japanese comics. Where did you get your facts? I'd like to learn more myself. I've read Joe Barbera's autobiography, but finding info on classic HB history is tough.

My information came from the book, Hanna-Barbera Cartoons, published in 1997.

I agree with you about the boobie factor. Everytime I see a pic of Velma, she changes her bra size about as much as Britney Spears!

I'm sure this all predates the film "The Skeleton Key," which I hope to see on DVD this Christmas Holiday Season.

I just realized something -- the art looks a lot like some classic children's art from the 1950s. Don't worry; it is a compliment. You've found a way to make Velma look pretty smart with a few simple lines on her face. I also appreciate how the details are sharper toward the center of the action, then became more vague and even dissipate as you move further from the focus, to avoid any distration. Very centripital (or is it centrifugal).

Who's the guy in the back?

I hope you're getting paid a lot for your work. It certainly looks like a lot of effort.

Jaguaro

PS: I plan on looking for the CD. It doesn't look good; a DVD that I put with your package is also missing. Both have probably been lost in the move.

Jag,
BUMMER! That CD is worth hundreds...of cents. Oh well, when I have time I will try to send you another.

I have not heard of the film "Skeleton Key"....so I can honestly say that I was not influenced by it. The commissioner had the idea for the key, but I put the skull on it! BTW, he's a good customer. I like to think I'm giving him plenty for his dollar, but he has long term ideas for more art and even a Velma sculpture, so I will continue to try and keep him happy.

Makes sense. That person seemed like an alright person, but I couldn't afford putting in any time for what he wanted...and I need to do a lot more fanfic writing before I can begin to charge anyone for my work.

People keep commenting on the breasts, but if you look at the original HB model sheets, Velma is pretty busty...but maybe it's just that big orange sweater. Who knows what's going on under there? It might be Scrappy Doo.
