Description

Rex Mason was a handsome and fearless explorer and adventurer who began working for ruthless billionaire industrialist Simon Stagg CEO of Stagg Industries who frequently sent Rex on missions to retrieve rare items from around the world that would grant him further power or help him invent new innovations for his company. While Rex disliked Simon and distrusted his motives he was madly in love with Stagg’s daughter Sapphire and hoped he could earn enough money working for him to afford a dream wedding for he and Sapphire.

Simon disapproved of Mason’s relationship with his daughter and routinely spied on them using his bodyguard Java to keep tabs on them. Feeling Mason was getting too close to marrying his daughter and becoming an heir to his empire Stagg came up with a plan to rid himself of Mason by stranding him in Egypt.

Simon then sent Rex and Simon’s bodyguard Java to Egypt to find and retrieve a mystical ancient artifact known as the Orb of Ra. Unknown to Rex, the dimwitted Java had feelings for Sapphire as well and plotted to kill Mason once they completed their mission.

Mason and Java located the orb hidden inside the pyramid of Pharaoh Ahk-Ton. Once Rex discovered the resting place of the orb and the larger radioactive meteorite it was carved from inside a hidden chamber deep within the pyramid. Seizing the opportunity the brutish Java knocked Rex out, stole the orb and trapped him within the chamber leaving him for dead.

Mason revived but was unable to escape the chamber and passed out when the meteroite bombarded him with a sudden flare up of radiation. The intense radiation mutated him on the cellular level granting him the ability to shape shift and change himself into any element found in the human body, or any combinations thereof for a variety of effects and morph himself into any shape he could imagine but it left his body horribly misshapen and disfigured with each limb and sections of his body segmented into different elements.

Awakening a dazed Mason happened upon a large mirror used to reflect sunlight into the chamber and was horrified upon seeing his appearance. Desperate to escape the pyramid Mason used his newfound powers to become a cloud of sentient gas and escaped through the seams of the pyramid’s stones.

Using his powers Mason pursued Java to Stagg’s mansion in the United States of America where he confronted Simon and Java intent on killing them in revenge for causing his freakish condition. Upon seeing him and realizing the monster assaulting Java was Rex, Sapphire fainted unable to accept what she was seeing.

When Rex attempted to attack Simon the radiation from the Orb of Ra, which Simon was holding, weakened Rex. Stagg used the opportunity to plead with Mason and convinced him that he only intended to strand him in Egypt and not have this happen to him.

Stagg convinced Mason he would try and cure him using all his resources and state of the art lab underneath Stagg Mansion but despite his best efforts for months Stagg couldn’t find a cure and return Mason back to human.

Angry that Mason survived and humiliated him in front of his boss Java decided to burn the mansion down with Mason and Stagg still inside not realizing the object of his affection Sapphire was still in the mansion’s tower and was now trapped by the fire.

Using his powers Rex saved Simon, doused the fire and rescued Sapphire who admitted to him she still loved him despite his appearance. Bolstered by this and Sapphire’s encouragement that he could use his newfound powers for good Rex dubbed himself Metamorpho the Elemental Man and began a career as a super hero.

Since then Metamorpho married Sapphire and went on to be a founding member of Batman’s team The Outsiders and then joined the Justice League in several of its incarnations.

Sadly over the years his marriage to Sapphire ended in divorce and his son Joseph inherited his father’s mutated appearance and powers as he matured. Despite their divorce Rex still plays an active roll in the lives of his family and has become a fixture among the super hero community as one of their greatest members.
