Description Amber Gangi ([link] ) and Candace Nirvana ([link] ) just standing around like they usually do.

The lighting setup for this is my preferred art lighting setup. See [link] on shooting Rael on a pedestal for a walkthrough!

I worked with both of these ladies together and separately a few years ago, definitely top talent. Both have moved to the Left Coast.

Now, that's what I call "putting someone on a pedestal." I really like how the lighting came out on this shot; I presume due to the height, you had no choice but to have some light reflected upward to catch the model on the pedestal, while the other was caught in light from her side and above.

Don't know if you could have done it any other way, but I think the result is just perfect--makes the skin of the one on the pedestal look like marble, perhaps due to a brighter/harsher light (?). Anyway, great photo, I'll keep this in mind for the next folio.

bound-eye [2007-06-11 01:03:20 +0000 UTC]

I think it is a combination of things - the b/w, the stylistic pose, but the models feel "silver" or metalic to me - not that this is a bad thing, just a flavor that struck as I was looking at the image.

I don't know why it is but for some reason my eye also interprets certain black and white exposures as looking a bit metallic. It's an effect I really try hard to get.

I truly enjoy your images. This is no exception.

I especially like the way your shots show seriousness with a little playfulness. It leads me to believe that you enjoy your work and actually immerse yourself in it, like I do.

I noticed that much of your backdrop work involves paper. Is this due to the cost factor of fabric or do you prefer the texture of paper to fabric. I am not trying to offend you. I am just looking for some insight.

Thank you for sharing your visions with us.

mjranum In reply to cross1492 [2007-06-10 21:39:55 +0000 UTC]

I am actually using a painted cyclorama sweep made of plywood. I just love the neutral grey background I can get with a paper sweep - but the darned paper sheets are $$$$ive!! ($45 a roll plus $35 shipping!) so I finally just made a built-in sweep and I periodically roller paint it with flat paint ($25 gal paint gives me four treatments)

I've got a few dozen muslins of various sorts back in my studio and I never use 'em.

cross1492 In reply to mjranum [2007-06-12 21:07:36 +0000 UTC]

That's a good idea. I'll have to try that. I would definately be more cost effective.

Many people tend to believe that photography is a "cheap" business to get into and maintain. However, most of those people are the ones that complain about a $4 4x6 print.
