She looks so haunted...I'm not sure what's creepier, the way she's cradling the rat or the child's proximity to that destruct-o-matic.

I was up in Toronto two years ago and I met this homeless guy there...he had a pet rat--white, with red eyes. I think he took it out in order to try and creep me out (didn't work), and he let it run all over his body, through his clothes. This guy was in his mid-twenties, thin, and probably sick. But he treated that rat with a rough affection that defied pity. This doesn't really have anything to do with your picture, it just reminded me of it--and how people will cling to something to love even in their worst circumstances.

I feel about rats for pets the way I feel about most pets...how nice for you, the owner. No, I don't want to pet your barracuda/boa/hamster. I wonder how different my life would be if my parents had let me have that dog I wanted as a child...
