Shima Nishimura comes from a wealthy family. Because of that, he had to live up to his families expectations and have piano lessons, tutors, etc so at school he was considered quite the genius. That's why he sort of developed some overconfidence. He worked hard and studied and tried to fit in at school, but the more they grew, the more distant he grew to his friends because of all the time he had to dedicate to his studies. To add to that, he wasn't even good at sports so he couldn't really join the others for club activities or games.

He started feeling lonely and would run away from home at night just to feel better and relieve his stress. One night, he ran so far that he got lost and while trying to figure out a way home, he remembered something he heard about in class. Something about using the stars to find the way home. When he looked up he saw the beautiful tinkling stars and while walking completely captivated by its magical appearance he ended up home. Since then he's had been completely infatuated with them and decided to study stars.

Shima convinced his parent to let him study at Hoshizora. There he found life to be a lot more enjoyable because he had more free time and he could share his passion for stars with the people there.
