The Hale Fighting Vehicle - 5A1 'Boxer' was developed as a highly mobile, lightweight armoured transport vehicle for the Escean military. Adopted in 2101, the vehicle is built upon a heavily modified Hale/Light series hull, being raised in height to accommodate a troop compartment capable of transporting one full squad of seven fully equipped troops. A crew of two operates the vehicle, with the vehicle commander also controlling the 25mm autocannon from a position in the rear compartment. This heavily protected vehicle makes extensive use of modular, spaced armour blocks mounted around its hull, as well as numerous smoke dischargers for concealment in the visual and infrared ranges. The rear door lowers to form a ramp, while roof hatches can be accessed by passengers for emergency egress, or the engaging of targets with the stowed anti-tank or anti-aircraft missiles commonly carried by the vehicle.

The Boxer employs a single 25mm K-52 autocannon in a remote weapon station, mounted over the deleted secondary crew position beside the driver. The ammunition cylinder for the autocannon can hold 1000 rounds of HEDP, API, or APFDS, and rotates with the RWS mounting to allow three-sixty-degrees traversal. This weapon is controlled by the commander from a position behind the driver, and located centrally in the rear troop compartment. A rearward facing seat to the left of the commander station, and directly behind the driver, is allocated to a squad leader. The six remaining members of a squad are seated on inward facing benches either side of the vehicle.

The lightweight nature of the Boxer makes it an ideal armoured transport for airborne forces, capable of airdrop via transport aircraft or super heavy VTOLs. It has been employed by both terrestrial and interstellar branches of the Escean military, being praised for its protective qualities, relative comfort, and agility in a variety of environments. Sealed against CBRN threats, the vehicle can also be pressurised for operation in thin atmosphere. HFV-5A1 vehicles were first used in combat during the 2104 Hurot confrontation, and participated in the recapturing of the island's main airport.
