Yeehaw! Roped me a pegasus!

My entry for day eleven of the Equestria Daily Newbie Training Grounds. The theme was "rope trick". I decided on an Applejack/Rainbow Dash picture mostly because I wanted to draw them both.

Lessons:
Aw, this one turned out terrible. The outlines are way too thick because of a really really stupid mistake on my part. I used the same sized brushes as I always do, but the sketch was a quarter of the usual size. It makes the whole picture look... bloated. I should have resized the sketch before I started inking.
I didn't figure out what had gone wrong until about half way through colouring and I had spent a lot of time getting the overlap between colours right. Note to self: next time, start a new layer for each differently-coloured component instead of doing it all on one layer.
Badly as this picture turned out, it was a big lesson for me so... it served a purpose, I guess.

I am having a lot of problems colouring the eyes. For this one, I had to export from SAI to Photoshop and do the gradient there, erase the black inked outline of the iris, then repair the white. There has to be an easier way. How do other artists do it?

Applejack sure looks happy about her prize. I'm not sure what her intentions are.
