Description Eureka, officially the Capital DistrictΒ and often written as Eureka, C.D.Β is the capital city of the California Republic. It is located on San Pablo Bay, bounded by the Napa River on the west and the Carquinez Strait on the south. The city was designed to be the capital beginning from the original creation of the State of California in 1853, and was named for the state (later national) motto, from a Greek expression meaning "I have found it". As the sea of the Californian federal government, it is an important political center in North America, and is also separate from any other state, functioning similarly to the city-state of San Francisco to the southwest.

Constructed to be the state capital of California, the major buildings of government (Governor's Mansion, Supreme Court, State Capitol, etc) were still under construction when the War of Dissolution broke out and plunged North America into civil war. Eureka was retained as the national capital when independence was declared, and made part of a newly-created Capital District to separate it from the surrounding state of San Francisco. A municipal government separate from the aegis of the National Government was organized in 1873, and as its population grew rapidly it quickly met the boundaries it had been set with.

From 1887 to 1893 a major land project diverted the mouth of the Napa River to its present location and connected the portion of Mare Island cut off by the river's new flow via land fill, giving the city its present shoreline. Major park projects were also implemented to beautify the city and a bridge crossing the Carquinez Strait was completed in 1905, connecting it to the southern bank of the strait and through to Richmond via roads and railroads. Though it was not severely damaged by the Great Quake of 1906 (being more affected by the 1868 Hayward Earthquake), it did see significant structural harm into the city and the collapse of the original bridge crossing the strait.

Regardless of the disaster, the city would continue to prosper through the 20th century, growing its population significantly to become the 6th most populous city in the country. Major investments into infrastructure have also helped the city's growth, with the creation of a subway system and the later connection of the city to the High Speed Rail system. It does have relatively less highway infrastructure, having fought the highways tooth and nail during their construction and in the modern day is considered very bike-friendly and to have a robust public transportation system made up of buses, mass transit (primarily its subways), and ferry connections directly to San Francisco. The current bridge connecting it to Contra Costa via Highway 7 was completed in 1961, replacing an older bridge to the east.

Being host to the executive, legislative, and judicial branches of the Californian national government, the city's important political status also makes it host to the majority of foreign embassies and also the host to a large number of international organizations, trade unions, non-profits, and professional organizations including from MediCal, the Californian Red Cross, the North American Geographic Society, and the National Audubon Organization. After prolonged efforts from city and national officials, the city has the same level of representation and internal self-government as a state despite still officially being the Capital District, governed by a mayor and an 11-member city council. It was named the North American Cultural Capital for 1983 and 2010, and is currently lobbying to host the 2028 Olympic Games.

Yes, there is. It's called the North American Union and it's headquartered in Chicago. There's no organization for all the Americas though.
