Some things, like military technology, are less advanced without the advent of the Cold War (for example, atomic bombs are still mostly delivered by plane at this point.) However, other things are a bit more advanced, like space travel and electrical cars and that sort of thing.

At independence, it still had Northern Borneo as part of its territory, but a guerrilla movement (that may or may not have been funded by Brunei) resulted in the "Republic of North Borneo" becoming independent in 1974.
