Hello there my childhood memory :3

Honestly, I never drew fanart before, because i did not feel like it. But the Unicorn started to poke me some weeks ago and today felt like why not. She was a hard nut to crack! She is originally super stylised and the whole anime stuff is not my thing to draw, so figure out how to put her in my also stylised style, without making her loose to much unique traits of her own was more difficult than I expected. She is not perfect, I know, but was an experimental piece and I do like how soft she came out - that was kind of a goal, she is a very naive, very soft character, despite she is pretty old in the story already.

I am spoilering heavily, so if you somehow did not see or read the story yet and want to go and watch/read it first

I admire this story so much, but not because of the whole romance thing - I was never into that girly stuff even as a child xD - but how she represents growing as a person. The movie is not making it clear, but in the book she is very-very old, even her coat is not so snow white anymore and she lived in an age when magic started to vanish from the world. People don't believe in unicorns anymore and they stopped showing themselves to them because of it. There is a specific scene in the book that really stick with me, when she is already on the journey with the magician and walking into a young couple - a prince and his betrothed. They are out in the meadow, picnicking if I recall correctly and she is like "Nah, okay, get over with this nonsense." and she grabs the golden halter she brought with herself and starts to sing. As a virgin herself if she sings she is supposed to attract a unicorn - it is a super old tradition the girls had to do before marriage in the book, and her father is old-school and forces her to do the tradition. She herself doesn't believe in unicorns, neither her betrothed and they are like "Sure whatever." The unicorn does hear her song, knows she is technically pure, but because she has no faith in her heart, she refuse to go out. The pair is like "See, it is bullshit." and soon enough they go away. The magician doesn't get what was the unicorn's problem and asks her and she explains how people don't believe in them anymore so why she should show up. The whole story is just so sad, because changing can be sad, but you cannot keep everything as the same forever. Things have to go on.

The whole changing is the main concept of this story and even though I did read the whole story analysis of the book - how the unicorn represents virginity and the red bull the first menses and stuff I feel like this cold fact to fact viewpoint kills the whole magic of this story. The changing is super sensible even without the whole menses image - the unicorn doesn't feel regret or super complex emotional: she can be sad, but no regret and no love either, like be in love. She is super busy to be perfect and innocent and pure. But then she is forced to go on her journey and even though she is hundred years old her soul is weirdly tired due to her age and she is even apathetic, somehow she is still like a child who stepped on the road growing up. Stepping over her fears, knowing more about the world than her forest, meet new people, be familiar with new emotions and then making a decision she will regret, but knows that was the right choice and make a sacrifice.... this is such a fucking beautiful story about a woman who gets scars, but becomes stronger than she was before. I absolutely love it and now I have to re-watch it.

And the OST? Is freaking perfect.
