I'll say they could be sisters.

agreed, that is way more plausible, but someone on tumblr did suggest that nessa could be shelly and archie's daughter so i'm also leaning towards that

I'm leaning towards that too especially since later generations apparently take place years in the future. An example being that Red was 10 in the Kanto games and is now apparently a young adult in Alola.

oh yeah, i believe it's something like a 10~20 year jump from the original kanto games to alola? so it's definitely possible that archie and shelly had nessa maybe some time after or even before the r/s/e games and she's a young adult now as well.

Possibly, though I wonder how old Nessa is in Sword and Shield because for all we know she could be a teenager. This is especially apparent as even a 10 year old like Iris can be gym leader.

right, in fact, i think a majority of gym leaders and trial captains are pretty young (especially the trial captains, seems that the leader types – especially the girls – get younger and younger each game), so it's entirely possible that nessa is maybe around 16 years old. nintendo also seems to have a habit of drawing adolescent girls as a tad bit older than they seem. still, my guess for nessa's age is anywhere from 18-22.

Perhaps. The gym leaders and elite four(trial captains are apparently the equivalent to gym leaders while island kahunas were the equivalent to elite four) were actually chosen trainers who specialize in specific types of Pokemon and welcome challenges from trainers. If the theory of Nessa being the estranged daughter of Shelly and Archie holds up, then how did she get chosen to become gym leader in Galar? Sometimes being a gym leader is more like a "family business or tradition" given how most gym leaders, most in the case of the anime, are revealed to be next in line to run the city/town gyms. For instance, Brock's father was originally gym leader until he let his eldest son Brock take over, and Misty's older sisters ran as gym leaders for a time until they decided to let their little sister Misty take over.

ah, agreed that gym leaders, and sometimes even trial captains, seem to be a heritage thing (with brock and misty as you mentioned, as well as koga and hapu), though trial captains do seem to be a bit more random. if archie and shelly didn't want nessa, perhaps one of them sent her over to some family living in galar to raise her? i think that's (or a variation of that scenario) most likely. it's seen that some kind of mentor/apprentice relationship can also lead to the leadership being passed down with juan and wallace from hoenn, so perhaps nessa became the apprentice to the previous water type gym leader in galar when she was little, and received the title when the leader retired or something.

Indeed, that could be the case. Its possible that heritage plays a part in a gym leaders and trial captains/island kahunas especially since there could be a theory in which families in their generations choose a successor to become leader. And yeah, gym leaders can also be positions for apprentices of previous leaders for when the latter retires.

Of course, though for some reason 10 is apparently standard until later generations.

Probably, but that begs the question; can a trainer start their journey at any age?

That's a good question, we know that they are able to get their own Pokemon at an early age considering the preschooler trainer class and the pokemon schools, but I don't think we know if they can venture out alone yet

True. Most trainers gain Pokemon at an early age or at least have the experience of using a Pokemon in battle or caring for them.
