Description UPDATE 05/06: JOURNAL IS TRANSITIONING TO PHASE II! I'll be re-writing some info and updating species ref to fit with the new changes I made to the species. There are new features being implemented such as the emergence of a non-mermaid/more humanoid form and new traits being added to the trait list. Please be on standby regarding information on these changes.

UPDATE 08/23: In regards to the Sleeping Eye's marking that are attached to the spine, they will omitted. I'll be updating the visual guide soon in regards to this update. My recent designs where the eye is open don't feature this (especially if they're at the front) so they won't be needed.

UPDATE: I'll be featuring information that can be found in the comments! This guide is still a huge wip in terms of data (finalizing a bit and still making some visual guides) Feel free to ask more info about them if you have any curious questions/clarifications/etc.

This is a closed species. Please don't create a Bakuinawa without my consent.

SPECIES OBSERVATIONS

✦Generally they are an alien lifeform that co-existed with the world way before man evolved (so they're kinda like an ancient species except they came from space)

✦They live in the deepest waters and only come to the surface when it's nighttime and most especially during eclipses. They are highly sensitive to sunlight due to the UV rays.

✦They live in the deep waters but are not limited to the ocean (E.g. lakes, rivers, etc. Any body of water that aren't shallow)
✦ They have gender specific traits too. Girls have a more mermaid like appearance with shorter horns, boys have a sea serpent-like tail and have longer horns, their wings also have peacock feathers to attract a mate.

✦ The species are based on narhwales and the Bakunaua, a Philippine dragon that is represented as a sea serpent. They are believed to be the cause of eclipses.

LORE

✦ The era of the Seven Seas Exploration was a time filled of curiosity and famed legends. Sailors who traveled the vast oceans brought home more than souvenirs from raids and exploits, they also brought with them stories that dared to defy the constraints of imagination. True enough, they are real however the beasts have become invisible to the aware consciousness of man and hid, becoming merely a legend. This is the legend of one of the sea's ethereal mysteries; The bakuinawa.

✦ In the middle of their explorations, sailors claim to see a peculiar figure in the waters. A mermaid like figure that had a horn and white glowing eyes. They fear the creature, initially seen as an omen in the seas for their unorthodox traits especially on stormy nights when the waves become giants and threaten to drown the ship or during eclipses, when the night intertwines with the magical realm. They keep their distance out of fear only to be blessed with good fortune for the following days. Slowly, the creature coined as the bakuinawa becomes a symbol of good fortune and safety in voyages.

✦ As the times change and so has the minds of men, the legend gradually deceased as sighting became less frequent. The lack of evidence that such creature exists and many hoaxes that used similar sea animals shattered the beliefs and hope of ever finding one. The legend turned into a drunken sailor's tale instead. However, there are recent reports of the discovery of the species' existence thus making it a living legend. Researchers studying the depths of the ocean, the deepest and darkest of the world's mysteries, found proof that they do exist. They are now calling for young brave souls to help them in their studies in order to uncover the secrets of the living beast. Are you up for the challenge?

KEY TRAITS

* The markings and the symbol (root) changes per Bakuinawa since they're all individually unique

✦ Horn
✦ Hip wings [ *Boys - have peacock feathers ]
✦ Ears (human ears are appendages, the "rabbit" ears are their true ears)
✦ Tails [ Girls - mermaid like, Boys - dragon like]
✦ Sleeping Eye

LEGEND  ✦ (Common), ✦✦ (uncommon), ✦✦✦ (Rare), ✦✦✦✦ (mythical)

SLEEPING EYE

✦ The Sleeping Eye is an alien parasite that attaches itself on the Bakuinawa
✦ The parasite is passed on through the genes via reproduction.

✦ Originally, bakuinawas did not have the parasite pre-earth however, they came in contact with the parasite along the way. It was a bigger threat then compared to post-earth because their bodies were in tune to the atmosphere in space.

When they reach earth, the change in atmosphere considerably aided in keeping the parasite on acting on the host (They're weaker here compared to in space where it can get more energy from the magical source.) In order to keep themselves alive they attached their genetic make-up to the DNA of the host, mingling their ties. If you take away one from the other, the host will die alongside the parasite.

✦ It's appearance is that of a marking, when it is being used by the host bakuinawa, it becomes visible and opens. The parasite catches magical energy from an eclipse, the main source for bakuinawas to be able to use "magic" and to activate their hidden abilities and the main food source of the parasite.

✦The parasite feeds off other lifeforms in small amounts. (This explains why bakuinawas live in groups/very sociable creatures)

✦If the parasite is able to over ride the bakuinawa's system, it turns the host into a rogue. Rogues are more serpent like and are very hostile.

✦ The sleeping eye is the Achilles heel of the bakuinawas. Thrusting an object through it can cause sudden death or irreversible damage to the creature.

THE HORN

ROOT & HORN - PARASITE RELATIONSHIP

✦ In order for the host to function normally without the full control of the parasite, the Eye gathers energy from different life sources (but most of the energy is captured when there are eclipses.) The energy they take from different life forms vary in terms of supplement and value.

They have to eat daily so there's enough energy distributed to the host and the parasite. The root regulates this energy (kinda like how enzymes work with the breaking down of nutrients) so that they're both satisfied.

If there is little to no energy for the root to regulate, the parasite becomes erratic (due to the lack of nutrients) and the horn will cease to function. This enables the parasite to take over the host to satisfy their needs. Once the parasite takes over their system it can no longer return the host's body back to the way it was before the system take over (because the root will no longer function.) So the parasite becomes the host (it's like a possession where the parasite possesses the host.)

The parasite is like the primal instincts of the host in a way that it heightens signals of primal needs. So, it has to be constantly satisfied.

SPECIAL CLASSIFICATIONS

✦ There are 3 classifications of bakuinawas: The common merfolk, rogues, and deities. This section will provide info on Rogues and Deities.

ROGUES

✦ Rogues are parasite infested bakuinawas. This means that the Eye is in full control of the host's body. The root will serve ineffective as the host will now act more on instinct than intellect.

✦ Rogues are known for their high aggressiveness and mutated form. Their physical mutations vary in appearance (most commonly, their hands turn into claws) due to the energy that is no longer regulated by the root. Physical modification is needed to better shape the primal instincts of the Eye (one of the side effects is the need to destroy)

✦ Rogues have a reputation to reducing populations of marine life, causing terror in the seas, and destroying ships.

DEITIES
✦ Largest in size, longest lifespan
✦ Source of magical power
✦ The King/Queen bee

DIET

✦ The bakuinawa's diet consists mostly of plankton and small sea creatures.
However, they are known to eat bigger animals like whales, dolphins and sharks in emergency cases. This is common with the bakuinawas that live in the colder regions where food is scarce.

✦ Bakuinawas cannot digest plants. Digesting it will cause indigestion and is considered to be poisonous to them. Bakuinawas do not eat squids, octopus and Mollusk

✦ There are instances where they are known to consume flesh (usually fresh corpses) however this is a rare phenomena. It only occurs to rogue bakuinawas that have been completely isolated from groups.

✦ Their diet is completely different from the Sleeping Eye. The parasite feeds off on energy (non physical components from eclipses and moonlight, and life energy from living lifeforms)

Good question. I'll update the sheet to omit that part since my recent designs where the eye is actually open (le cough the rogues) don't have it at all.

Can they have piercings/earrings on their floffy/perky ears??
Can they have accessories on their tail??
Are their clothes that are not available to them or not allowed??
Are their any limits on their design on their birthmark/root/sleeping eye??

Very very sorry for many questions ;w;

Yup, bakuinawa wings are fully functional but it's not used for flying. It's used to gain speed underwater xD
Yes, wings can have mutations wherein they're non aviary (like a dragon wing) but fin-like wings do not count as a mutation since they're a rare trait ovo//

okay so this time i'm gonna be focusing on the rogues + deities bc there's not a lot of info in your guide
totally not bc my interest is piqued by your recent batch

>> You say that the Eye is in full control of the host's body. Does this mean that it is impossible to communicate with a rogue bakuinawa?
>> Are there symptoms when one is turning into a rogue or does it happen like /snaps fingers? If there are symptoms, is it possible to stop the progress if you notice early enough? How late is too late?
>> Is it possible to trigger rogification (dunno what to call it sorry) other than starving the host of energy? Is it possible to reverse the process?
>> For deities, how many are there? Is there a fixed number total or just like a few for each region?
>> What exactly does "source of magical power" mean?
>> Are the parasites connected to deities weaker? Basically, are deities more powerful because the parasites are weaker or because they personally are stronger?
>> Are deities harder to kill or do they just live longer?
>> How do you make more bakuinawa???

sorry for the lateness, my parents dragged me on an excursion with them so i just got home /weeps

EDIT: added a few more questions ww

AMG excuse my typos if I ever. Currently on mobile bc my net is really slow this week qwq /also I'll try to update their section today if my net can carry so some of my answers will be copy-pasted there xD

Also I might contradict myself in some answers so feel free to point it out because I can't access my journal lolol. Answering this on notifications //'D

1.) yes, it's impossible to talk to them (with sense) because they no longer have the counterbrain to keep them in check. This leaves with a parasite that has corrupted the mental-physical-emotional state of the host.

In a way you can still talk to them but it's going to take a lot of effort. They no longer have an idea how to socialize with others, and it will depend on them too if they want to talk or not.

You can still take care of them but they're prone to very aggressive attacks if not well taken cared of.

2.) There are symptoms, the most obvious would be the physical mutations (however this is in the very late stages.)

Your first clue to see if your bakuinawa is turning into a rogue is self isolation and no socialization. And by self-isolation, I mean extreme self-isolation. They won't mingle/interact with any other living thing.

The only time you can act on it is on that stage because you can still push them to mingle/interact. They are very sociable creatures so they depend on companionship.

We're still studying when it's too late but we assume that once the level of self-isolation is deep and more symptoms start to show it will be too late to recover them.

3.) No, the only trigger is starving it off energy. //oh hahaa rogification nice nice

So far, like in the answer above, the only known process to reverse is during the first stage when there is still something you can do to counter. Unfortunately, fully turned rogues can no longer be reversed because the parasite kills the second brain (lol they gotta make sure their enemy is dead //'D

lol not sure if I stated it somewhere but I think I mentioned how the root no longer works when the parasite takes hold of the body. The parasite kills it so it can no longer function)

4.) There's a few for each region. There's no known set number as of late (due to how rare they are. It's not known if sailors from the past were able to record their encounters with them)

5.) I'll follow this one up bc I have to check on the journal so I can give a better answer xD

6.) The parasites are not weaker but they're not entirely stronger too. Deities are much stronger at default. Their roots can take on multiple parasites so that they can balance themselves ( and that's why deities can have multiple eyes xD )

7.) They're both hard to kill and have a longer lifespan. You can't kill a deity simply due to their size and strength. Deities are very large (think of 2 story house big and larger. Their minimum size should be a 2 story house.) their large size makes it hard for predators so hurt them.

Apart from their size, they also have fast regeneration. The strength of their root makes it possible for them to heal at a very fast rate (compared to their smaller counterparts). Fast healing is one of their abilities given by the root.

8.) //interesting question xD time to start science class!

Bakuinawas can produce in two ways: asexual and sexual reproduction.

Asexual reproduction only occurs in deities. The magical essence from their roots can form a bakuinawa. They harvest their energy to form them and bam! BABY! Bakuinawas produced this way are already immediately in their adult form.

Sexual reproduction can only occur to the normal bakuinawas. The process is the same as how birds mate with a dance. A portion of the male's energy will be transferred to the female's. The female will host the energy until the baby is formed. The process will take 5 months. The bakuinawas produced are in their baby stage (so you get smolls lol)

This sort of reproduction only occurs in their very late adult life (nearing infertility or death) because their instinct won't tell them to mate during majority of their life due to their long lifespan.

Sorry I have a few more questions-
Are Bakuinawas born with their parasites? If so, how is the parasite passed on? If not, what were they originally, and how does the parasite find/attach to them?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

mocimori In reply to ktensei [2017-06-03 23:29:05 +0000 UTC]

Ho ho, it's ok xD I like answering questions like these
//get ready for somes parasite lore time xD

Bakuinawas are born with the parasite. It was brought with them when they came to earth (from where they originally came.) Originally, bakuinawas did not have the parasite pre-earth however, they came in contact with the parasite along the way. It was a bigger threat then compared to post-earth because their bodies were in tune to the atmosphere in space. So, thir energy was usually regulated then all of a sudden this parasite attacks them and the equilibrium is lost (kinda like how our bodies react to diseases but there's no anti bodies for it)

When they reach earth, the change in atmosphere considerably aided in keeping the parasite on acting on the host (bc they're weaker here compared to in space where it can get more energy from the magical source.) In order to keep themselves alive (bc hey, survival of the fittest xD) they attached their genetic make-up to the DNA of the host, mingling their ties. If you take away one from the other, the host will die alongside the parasite.

The parasite is passed on through the genes via reproduction.

i'm always ready for lore-

So the parasite would always be "active"? Exactly how much of the host's nutrients does it take? Because children need more nutrients so I'm worried about the effects on their health and increased chances of death. Additionally, do all parasites take the same amount from their hosts? And do they take more when the host is using it to catch magical energy?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

mocimori In reply to ktensei [2017-06-04 11:21:27 +0000 UTC]

Haha amg xD yas lore!

Hmmm, it's like partially active? But it's more like they can only feel it when the parasite needs to have its needs satisfied. They don't feed on the nutrients, they feed on energy (like life source xD) the children are safe don't worry xD they have evolved so they can regulate the eye and themselves

They don't take the same amount from the host since they feed on energy xD but the root has to make sure there is enough energy to regulate so the parasite is well fed. The children can't really die too, at most they just turn into rogues since the parasite would like to survive (they're non-transferrable so their instinct to live will drive them to takve complete control over the system)

The parasite's main diet (from the source that gives it most power to the least)

Energy from eclipses > moonlight > other lifeforms > fellow bakuinawas

In times of capturing energy from non physical components, the host is not the one capturing energy, it's the parasite. The engery gathered will then be regulated by the root (bc the energy will also be used by the host's consumption. E.g self-healing wounds)

mocimori In reply to Navy-Blue-Falconet [2017-05-25 08:13:15 +0000 UTC]

It's a parasite that they can't live without xD Since the Sleeping Eye's DNA merged with theirs (I'll try to find an actual virus/illness that uses a similar method)

So, if the parasite dies, the host dies as well. The parasite lives off on life force though (it's regulated by the root-horn which acts as the immune system of the bakuinawa) so they're basically immortal if there's life until they can no longer sustain themselves.
