Its pretty simple!! all you need is a source of light, and a long exposure!

I took a long exposure and used this little LED to make swirls. I made a few with words and it was bomb as hell. Just get something with a light. You can use your cellphone but its not as cool. I recommend something really small, that has a focused source of light. Now......as for the vortex of doom......NOW SPILL THE BEANS YO lol

SMART!! My facebook display picture will soon involve something of the sort. Thank yooou!
Vortex of doom is eaasy. Just put the shutter speed at 2.5 or at any speed you like, just as long as it's really slow. And while the shutter is closed, zoom in and out!

Nice. These are fun. I've done one using my cellphone outdoors. [link] I've just bought a new camera with up to 60 second shutter and I stole a great led flashlight that has a windup charge so I don't have to worry about batteries for it. I'm anxious to come up with some new stuff. Keep up the great work. I don't think people play around enough with shutter speed.

Haha dude thats exactly what I used to make this, those things are super bright and the color on the one I have is amazing! 60 second shutter is more than enough to make some awesome art. And thanks for the comment! Ill be sure to check out your gallery to see what you come up with.

geez, I wonder if it's the same exact flash light. The one I have is a wind-up one. It has three bulbs, which it seems like yours has. Mine when you click it one it starts with the middle bulb, the next time you click it on, all three bulbs are on... maybe it's the same, maybe not, but that would be neat if it was... either way, keep it up.

Haha no mine isn't that fancy. It just has the winding arm and the on off switch and only two leds. Lets see that light painting!!! Ill be checking your gallery.

thanks, hopefully I'll have something soon. I ordered a camera on monday that has a 60 second shutter speed available so I'm really curious to see what I can do with it. The damn site I ordered it from though is so incompetent, it's been 5 days and I don't even have a shipping confirmation yet. Too frustrated to use my current camera for light painting. I'll let you know when I've got something.

Have you gotten it yet?? Is it through eBay? Adorama?

foodshelf In reply to ModulatedSignal [2009-03-25 03:56:13 +0000 UTC]

It's a horrible site based out of brooklyn. Ontimedigital.com is their name of all things. I was promised rush shipping, it's been 8 full days and I don't have as much as a tracking number yet for my $350. I know I'm getting the run around, but the stores here sell it for $400 and supposedly I'm getting an extra battery from this site... so... I think I just have to be patient. I really want to do more light painting after I've seen your work here, but it breaks my heart to do it with my old camera knowing I should have a 60 second shutter by now. I'm trying to hold out. I'll let you know once I've accomplished anything if my camera ever arrives.

DUDE!!! It sucks you havent contacted me before. That website is from a company that has about 10 different names. They scam people. Type "ontimedigital.com scam" into google and you will see all of their names. Ive heard stories where if you dont purchase their extra items they will cancel your order. If I were you I would get a new credit card!!! I almost ordered a Nikon D300 from them but I did my research and they are SCAMMERS!!!

ayeeeeeeee, yeah I can't believe I didn't look into it more. EF! well, at least today I got a tracking number from them. I'll be ok if I receive the camera yet. I just don't want to be out $350. It's been an absolute nightmare dealing with them. I call them everyday and call them out on lies, and they keep shifting the blame to their warehouse, or to a different customer service rep, or "mistake with labels".... I am going to cancel that card. I wouldn't put anything past them. I need to be way more careful before making an order. As long as the camera is in the hands of UPS, I feel a bit better. Now I'm just worried that the order will be screwed up and I won't get a refund if I ship it back. EF!

Well if it comes in good condition, keep it, and ask your bank to issue you a card with a new number. Im sure you read some of the posts where entire vacation packages were purchased on cards following their purchases with this company. I dont mean to scare you, its just better to be safe than sorry!!! I would want someone to warn me if I had purchased from those ass holes.

foodshelf In reply to ModulatedSignal [2009-03-29 16:38:30 +0000 UTC]

I hadn't read about the vacation packages. It doesn't surprise me in the least anymore though. Luckily my card has a single purchase limit of $300 unless I call in to have it temporarily upped. I still plan to cancel it as soon as I have a chance to look over the camera. It's such a bummer. The camera got here to Fargo, but with the big flood, UPS hasn't been delivering locally. So the camera is in town, but I STILL can't get it. I'm losing my mind. I'm starting to think some higher power really doesn't want me to have this camera.

still really anxious to do some light painting with it.

already did. got my new card yesterday. The way I see it I got ripped off for $50 because I can find the same set-up online for $300 and I paid $350. It still burns on a personal level, but I'm trying to forget about it.

Thing is, I'm thinking with 60 seconds you could really take your time and draw some elaborate scenes. This guy does some alright stuff, but I'm pretty sure he has to use a tripod and paste the pictures together in post-processing. [link] with 60 seconds. a lot can be drawn. I intend to prove that.
