Description This was taken in the newer cathedral in Salisbury, England. The cathedral didn't originally have a spire on it when it was built (in the 1200's) but they added one on. The spire weighed a total of 60,000 tonnes, made of lead. And thus, these columns began to bend over 100 years.

In the 1300's, flying butresses and arches were added to the cathedral to prevent the columns from snapping, and two points were marked in the main cathedral floor area under the spire. One where the centre of the spire was directly above originally, and one where it had moved to in the 1300's. The two points were about 1/2' apart. Now, no one knows if the columns have bent any more, but the centre of the spire has moved about 3 feet since then, and you can feel it swaying in the wind at the top.
