MOJAL β€” Asperger's Is A Gift

Description One of my ex's once called it a disability, and did I get pissed...

Edit: I've found that some misinformed trolls like to come by and try to stir up arguments by putting down Asperger's as something we do on purpose, or something silly we could easily stop doing. Ignore them, they'll go away on their own if they're not fed. Thank you!

i have asperger's and i genuinely don't understand how it could be considered a "gift". i'm not proud of having it, but i'm not ashamed of it either.

I'm proud of it. I excel in every subject except math and I'm super confident.

i was diagnosed with aspergers at 5 years old, and let me tell you, it's not a gift

as a child i had to go through years of social, physical, and occupational therapy to get where i am today, and i still struggle with my motor skills and socialization. i also used to be considered gifted, though i was in remedial classes, so when i got far enough along to be put into regular classes, my grades slipped and ive been a b or c student ever since, and it makes me feel stupid bc of how high my grades were when i was in the slower-paced classes. and the reason i was in those classes? aspergers and adhd, but mostly aspergers.

tl;dr, i have struggled because of my aspergers and i do not see it as a gift.

My own Asperger's is a royal pain in my ass. I can't even put sentences together or read without jumbling up my words or not making sense. Well I mean I CAN read but it just feels so darn exhausting. And when I mean I can't put sentences together I mean that I just jumble up words and even stutter/mispronounce certain words without even trying to.
It might even have something to do with my crappy social skills as well but I have no idea how bad it really is since I only went to the doctor's ONCE for it. She told me I was somewhere in the Asperger's spectrum based on my speech patterns so...eh.
So yeah, it is a disability if you can't read/talk very well.Β

Alright so, if it's a gift, then what are these benefits? I'm actually curious here. I looked at the symptoms list of Aspergers, there seems to be NOTHING good there.

Most scientifics have asperger's. It is even considered Albert Β Einstein had asperger's. It makes you more aware, more creative, to think up worlds. To make art and try express yourself through it.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Callisto81896 In reply to Bezrail [2017-05-19 11:26:19 +0000 UTC]

Hmm, I don't know. While I recognize that most scientists had it, you have to ask; did they make their accomplishments BECAUSE of Aspergers, or DESPITE Aspergers? There's also the correlation-causation problem, etc.

And I don't think those are actually symptoms of it. If you look at the CDC's page for Autism Spectrum, nothing of what you listed is there. ASD, of which Aspergers is a subset, has purely detrimental symptoms. The things you listed simply are not part of it.

But I mean, if you have another source of equal to or greater than reputability than the CDC that says otherwise, I'd love to see it.

So, to any person who thinks aspergers is a choice, it isnt.Β  It's a mental "difference" that provides us extreme skill or ability in one area, at the cost of reduced levels in others.Β  I should know, I'm a genius with computers (with all honesty and humility), and I completely fail when trying to socially interact with anyone that isnt online.Β  So, to the jerks who will label me a retard for having aspergers, I have a 146 IQ, and have worked with design teams to make two major video games, Skyrim and (slightly) HL2 Episode 2.Β  You work at Taco Bell.Β  Who seems better off?

Sorry to anyone who read my rant and was thinking "What the hell?"Β  I just get ticked off at the amount of negativity towards the Aspergers and Autistic community as a whole.

Really? Then why am I stupid as fuck and talented at absolutely nothing? I wish autistic people understood that autism isn't a superpower, expertise comes from level of focus, dedication, practice, and a certain amount of natural talent. For me I just got the butt-end. I'm all the socially stupid, none of the hyper-intelligent 150 IQ shit.
