Description This is a light stencil of a hot air balloon.
It looks kinda 3D, don't you think?

If you look closely you'll see a little guy in the basket

Well it's like normal stencil that you would use with spray paint except you use light (a camera flash) instead of paint. What you do is you set up a camera to take the photo with a long exposure (like 15 seconds). You set off this camera then run in to the shot and fire a flash from another camera (or wireless flash) behind the stencil through a pyramid shaped rig painted black and with tinfoil on the inside attached to the back of the stencil (which is also painted black) facing back towards the camera taking the photo. Once you've done that run back out of shot so you don't appear in the photo.

Sorry, I still don't completely understand what it is, so I can't give you any real critique on the construction.

I can tell you that it looks very realistic though, and you did a great job paying attention to the details.

The only thing I don't really like is the setting. The shady atmosphere somehow doesn't fit the brightness of the balloon. They look like two separate images forced together.

yea it's dark because it was taken at night, and light stencils don't show up very well when it's light for obvious reasons. You can see with the little bit of light there is that the stencil is slightly transparent.

The hot air balloon itself is really pretty, good job on the coloring The only thing that bothers me is that little hint of a background in red. I think you should either emphasize it or take it away. It looks kinda akward

What do you use to mask off the outside of the stencil?


And..since you're not actually cutting much out here, do you really think it belongs in the stencil gallery?

Well I cut a stencil of the balloon out of cardboard, paint it black, then stick the colour image of the balloon on the back of it like you would stick the tissue paper on it.

What gallery do you think it should be in?

I'm not sure really, since there's no gallery for traditional art that looks like digital trickery. Maybe just keep em in stencils til we figure something else out

WOOO!!! OMG!

This looks so great! , anyone would just think it is a random balloon painted and put there on the grass or something, instead of the light stencil. Awesome! Love the vivid colours, and the 3d effect, as you said.

With every new picture you upload i want to try this more and more...shame i donΒ΄t have a digital camera at all, not even cellphone crappy one TwT (of course wonΒ΄t work with that lol)

Yea I just bought a new camera about a week ago,
you just need a camera that you can adjust the exposure length on.
