Description Most people will know my favourite books of all time are His Dark Material series by Philip Pullman. Even before reading them I thought of myself as having some kind of animal familiar that I'd be able to see if I looked hard enough (or lived in the right universe!). It used to be a big black dog, and now it's a small songbird that hops about a lot and blinds you with it's brightly coloured plumage It likes to sit on my shoulder and peck at my hair.

Once again I curse at the slight blur at the top of this >: ( but I love the colours The White clouds are much softer on the original - the camera really made them WHITE.

Coloured pencil on recycled reclaimed packing card. 9x11.5 cm.

I love how you in-cooperate so many colors in throughout the piece, even in the hair. Your style is absolutely lovely, and I love the sort of everyday feel this piece has. Great work, Molly.

I'm pretty sure I hate water!

The concept of animal familiars is ancient - Native American and Celtic pagan folklore both include them. The idea of them being physical beings that are an extension of you is quite unique to Pullman I think, but I like it.

Yes, I had never read them as being extensions or souls of humans...

I love the Native American take on them being totems or guides, their foklore on the subject is just wonderful

love it anyway...say...do you ever make your own papers? have you ever tried it?
I was just thinking how awesome your work would look on some handmade paper
I made some once out of magnolia petals and cotton fibers...twas fun and turned out nicely...

Handmade paper tends to be too delicate for the way I draw. Regular copy paper is sometimes a bit too thin - that's why I draw on card

A gorgeous piece! It caught my eye instantly. I finished reading the trilogy a few months ago and it was the most unique and imaginative story I've read for a while.

I was actually told about them by my physics teacher when I was doing my GCSEs (About 11 years ago ) to explain dark matter to us! That's why I love them, they take bits of legend, folklore, science and religion and everything he does can be traced back and 'roven' in some way. Like the entire series could actually happen.
