Linden Labs is working on another alternate world, this one optimized for VR equipment. It's called Sansar and is in Beta right now but I'm able to access it and wonder around. Here young Molly (I don't have enough control over the avatar appearance to get me close to my usual age) is wondering around on the sea bottom of "The Coral Reef Treasure" experience. What may not be obvious in this picture is that Sansar handles materials much, much better than Second Life. It ain't yet ready for prime time, but it's very interesting and I'm going to be keeping my beady little eye on it.

It seems young molly has stumbled on to the underwater city of Rapture.

It certainly was a pretty place. The diver's corpse in front of me is holding a map of a sunken submarine which was nearby. It appears there is a "x marks the spot" treasure to be found on the map.

Sansar doesn't seem that impressive to me yet, what is going to make or break it in my opinion will be how easy it is to generate user content. Second life already had a pretty steep learning curve with prims and lsl, it's going to be much harder if content creation requires that people learn even more programs like blender or 3ds Max.

It's sure in beta.
I love the way it handles lighting and materials already, though.
As for content creation, I have yet to mess with that. It appears that you create "experiences" which are a little like small sims or something. I don't know that I'll mess with it enough to figure things out while it's in Beta but I plan to keep an eye on it because it's so pretty. Me like pretty....
