Each time she glanced at the ovoid from looking anywhere else, she thought she saw it ripple – but only just. If she looked at it any harder than a glance, it did not move. It was when she finally saw an identical, chunky datapad strapped on the counter to the one that McCoy had given her that anything of note happened. She reached for it and unstrapped it from the desk, picking it up and inspecting it in her hands.

Cadence glanced up at the shape in the tube – and this time it shuddered and did not stop. The black, suspended in blue, unfurled beneath the glass like a bruise beneath skin. The xenobiologist wasn’t sure what or where to look, transfixed, horror rising so plainly now that it completely overrode the soft, siren singing. The singing without words, without melody, without thought, with only incomprehensible alien emotion – oh god.

Teeth flashed at her, huge teeth, and with each shuddering ripple of its egg-like shape its limbs unfurled. Two, three, four – a whip-like, segmented tail uncoiled from somewhere and thumped at the glass, disturbing the fluid and throwing millions of bubbles about the containment chamber.

‘Some of the things contained here can’t be let out.’
