Description It's been a sad week here. My son's dog Vixen was diagnosed with diabetes and kidney failure so on Tuesday, we made a very hard choice and I made her last day the best that I possibly could.

Once upon a time, I had an idea for an anthro/furry story/graphic novel called Ninth Life and most of the characters were based on pets I had during my life. In the story, Vixen was a perky little girl dog found by Contessa and Spooky living in an abandoned building where she had been the witness to a murder. She refuses to speak to anyone -- until Patrick, accountant and former criminal scent specialist , turns up to do the detective agency books. Vixen latches on to the gruff older dog and he eventually adopts her. Spooky would help with the little quirks of raising a pre-adolescent girl from time to time and Tawnee turned up as Vixen's soccer coach.

Which is why Spooky and Tawny are just as upset as Patrick at Vixen's passing.

Vixen 'Squirrelly Girly, Curly Tail, Gas Bomb' Hayden -- 2001-2010.
".... a good, good girl."

I can relate to how hard it is to lose a very special family pet. I've lost several pets, and it is always hard when it does.

It's always important to keep an old and sick pet HAPPY AND COMFORTABLE. Vixen's at peace, and she's not hurting or in pain anymore. Cherish the fond memories of her.

My family and I had to put our 16-year-old black-and-white girl cat, Polly to sleep last week on Monday, 4/12/10 so a week ago. My dad got talked into taking a kitten from where he worked in 1994.
Polly was a real spitfire.

*HUGSHUGSHUGS* I'm sorry to hear about the passing of a pet... we just went through the loss of a cat who was only seven years old last year. This is a beautiful memorial, though.

I'm so sorry for your loss, and I know how hard it is. I lost my female dog in 01/30/2010 after spending 8 years together. I still remember, as if it was yesterday, when the vets said that my dog had to be sacrificed because of laking of options and then i shouted with tears in my eyes "HOW ABOUT SACRIFICING YOUR GRANDMA INSTEAD? SHE IS STILL ALIVE. DO YOUR BEST TO HEAL HER BECAUSE I'M PAYING YOU FOR THAT". After some days showing signs of recovery, both me and the vets were shocked when she suddenly died. Nobody knows how or why, but at least she is now resting in peace.

Such a beautiful farewell picture!!

This is the sweetest thing I've ever seen done for the passing of a beloved pet. Having just rescued a really older dog, this kind of thing really hits home.

I have no idea what it's like to lose a pet as I've never had one but I'm sorry you lost a member of your family. I'm familiar with that kind of loss.

A very good visual representation of grief, the price we pay--and pay--and pay--for love. You do a very good job of making an image out of your emotion, I hope time and memory will bring healing.

I'm so sorry about your loss. I've lossed 3 of my dogs (2 from having to be put down from arthritus [they were mother & son so the disease passed from genes] and the third I had to give away because he was too young to stay at a kennel while my house had been under 2 months of construction) so I totally understand, and I'm so sorry.
But I'm very sure Vixen is in dog-heaven along with my own dogs and is eating her favorite snacks day in & day out, and is doing her favorite activites (chasing a tennis ball or swimming etc.) like my dogs are as my Mother often tells me.

My dad's family lost the best dog in the world to cancer when she was only eight years old, and we still can't talk about her without crying three years later. Cassie was a husky/shepard mix we resuced from a shelter, and she was smarter than half the people I know. She recognized people, and what cars they drove. She knew everyone's name including frequent visitors, and she would only bark at anyone she hadn't been introduced to. She kept the little children in the yard and kept strangers away. She was wonderful, and I'm tearing up even now. Sorry for you and your son's loss.

I agree. I remember when we lost Buffy, our Cocker Spaniel. She was about nine and got some kind of infection and had to be put down. I know how upsetting it is to lose a pet. I dread the day I have to say good-bye to Bridger.

I'm so sorry for your loss, and I know how hard it is. We had to put down our dog Quintin in the 8th of february after we had him diagnosed with cancer. Sadly, we only got to have him for 6 months. The only good thing about it is that in the time we had him, he filled so much in our lives it was unbelievable, and on the other hand, he isn't suffering anymore. Still, loosing a pet, no matter how long you've had it, is very hard to deal with.
