What kinds of bread are these characters based off of?

The middle guy is anpanman, he's based on anpan, a type of bread thats filled with bean jam or something. The guy on the left is shokupanman, he's just a plain slice of white bread. The one on the right is Melonpanna, she has melonpan for a head. Im not really sure whats all in melonpan.

I don't think the show was ever released in English, was it? I must confess that I haven't seen a single episode and only know about it because the theme was used in a DS port of Taiko no Tatsujin -_-;
