I used to think that too! I always just knew what I wanted to draw, line by line, and all these circles seemed stupid and useless. But there were things I could draw, and things I couldn't draw, no matter how hard I tried. I discovered that I will never be able to draw these things if I don't create some method of drawing them. All these circles help you see what you're trying to draw before you actually draw it, and they give you a chance to correct any mistakes before you create the final lines. Without them I'd need to draw a horse over and over again, waiting for it to "turn out" well, without any control over the process. So drawing guide lines is not really a waste of timeβrather trying to draw something you don't know how to draw will take you more time with no guarantee of success.

I don't say this free-drawing method is bad or something, it's just... limited. If you can't draw something, you will not learn it just by trying over and over again. I wasted many years trying to get better with this method, but it just wasn't possible in my case.
