u have to imagine a non-extinct animal as if it were extinct and scientists try so hard to avoid shrink-wrapping/no feathers/etc that they create a different kind of horror

The elephants were land-dwelling relatives dugong/manatee/etc. They have very prominent large fangs which are hidden in the mouth since they would rot if not inside the mouth similar to the smilodon. The elephant lived in a warmer climate and had massive ears to keep cool like the fennec fox. They had bright red markings to show potential predators that they are dangerous and can use their large fangs to deliver a powerful bite. They open their mouths to show off their fangs to potential rivals.
