Description A doodle in my notebook, done in a bus in my way to worl.

In Phantasy Star II, one of the central spots of the main plot was the "Nei Project" ("Nei", as the game explains, means "neither a monster or a man"), a genetic experiment conducted by palman scientists under Mother Brain's (a sentient supercomputer) guidance to produce improved soldiers by mixing genes of palmans and biomonsters. These new creatures, the "Numans" or "Newmen" (thanks, PSO) were suposed to be smarter, faster, stronger than any regular palman, but yet retain qualities of a good soldier - obedience, discipline, sense of duty and responsability. Their physical and mental development was incredibly fast, but their lifespam was probably shortened due to fast aging (this is a conjecture, the games don't state about a numan's life expectancy, but they are always very young - 2, 3 years old - and fully developed already).

However, the first successful prototype wasn't yet perfected... The first Nei, Neifirst (duh) lacked the qualities cited above: she was independent, recognized no leaders nor rules besides her own. She realized what she were, and why she was created, and hated every man for that. She outsmarted her creators, and killed them, deliberatedly causing havoc in her planet's artificial mantainance systems.

Another unexpected collateral effect was a deep personality split. So deep that, at some point (I believe during some early stages), this alternate personality, a loyal, compassionate and responsable mind, eventually generated an independent body from Neifirst's cells. The resulting creature was called, in the game, simply Nei. When Neifirst was unleashed, Nei managed to escape and took a different path. However, theirs bonds were so strong, that it was impossible for one to live without the other - which, in the game, leads to an intense emotional moment.

Yadda yadda, here I picture Neifirst as a late phoetus inside some tube filled with liquid, kept alive and fed by an umbilical chord linked on an artificial placenta, and monitored by wires. I have had this image in my mind for several days.

Very interesting, I take it you're not thrilled with PSO

Really neat idea. I think this one is worth inking and coloring, actually.
