Best anime by far. Question is, Asuka or Rei?

Neon Genesis Evangelion! Its an absolutely iconic anime show about teenagers piloting giant things fighting other giant things from space, basically.
BUT there's much more to the show than light entertainment. It has some very deep philosophical themes to it and it's plot is quite complicated and difficult to wrap your head around without help. For the full mindfuck experience I recommend watching the show. There are also the "rebuild" movies which are newer and have better animation quality, but they simplify a lot and sometimes just go in completely different directions. The show on the other hand takes its time to establish realistic characters, but has a lot more downtime as a result.

You did some very good work with the background of this one. I like how the buildings can be interpreted as coming out of the shadows, due to sunlight, or as being ruins after a confrontation between the EVA units and their opponents. Makes me wanna read the manga again. It has to be somewhere in my cellar...

It's a shame Latin was not used more often in EVA (given the Biblical refs and all).

Heh, apparently they thought German was a more powerful language B)

I suppose, but I still think Latin sounded more appropriate given the context.

make sure to see the movies as well - there are three movies out, which basically redo the whole series, but much better

Thanks for the tips, I definitely want to watch these too. What do you think is better about them though, specifically? What I like a lot about the original for example is how deeply it explores the main cast and how each member of it has a lot of depth. Wondering how that's possible to do within the span of three movies, especially since I heard they expanded on the action scenes, which were relatively brief in the original.

You ask what is better about them
to answer this, I must give you a small history lesson on the original Evangelion show:
TLR - they ran out of money towards the end. The show basically never got a proper ending. I can only imagine that other corners, animation-wise, also ended up being cut to keep things within budget.
These movies are fixing that - they have all the money. They're cutting out a ton of the 'filler' episodes from the show - it was a monster of the week show after all - and introduces a few new interesting characters.
...and then it also sort of retcons a shitload of stuff from the show. A lot of fans consider the movies an alternate universe to the original show canon. I don't mind either, but I do find the movies superior, as "bio-mecha vs giant monster" entertainment.
and yes - they did action scenes a lot better. Holy crap. They did everything better: world-building, action, everything.
You want to get to the 1.11, 2.22 and 3.33 versions of the movies - they're sort of like the directors uncut versions, with a few more minutes of content. The plain 1.0, 2.0 and 3.0 don't have everything in them.
Evangelion 1.11: You are (not) alone
Evangelion 2.22: You can (not) advance
Evangelion 3.33: You can (not) Redo
oh and lets just say that at movie 3 the movies radically diverge from what happened in the show. The fourth movie is supposedly currently in production, but has been delayed a number of times. I'm sure it'll happen eventually.

Hm... I have seen snippets of the fight scenes from the Rebuilds. They are bigger, and convey scale better, and spectacle... but they are also littered with CGI, especially on the angels. And at least from what I've seen, the editing doesn't seem to be nearly on top of the original series's game. A lot of that was propably indeed due to budget constraints, but... I don't see that as a disadvantage. It is afterall within the boundaries we get that we really start to find creative solutions. And I think that is what happened to the... "ending" of the show aswell. It went from what they later did in the EoE film to... well, a meta artsy thing. Though I should point out that the ending actually makes perfect sense with the rest of the show. It just doesn't give a lick about whether the viewer gets it or not. I am actually curíous as to what you consider filler in the show? I would actually say that there are things that should've been expanded upon, if anything. Like the twist with Lilith at the end of Ep. 24, which is never really brought up again in the show, although its such a vital part of what the conclusion is about. So I will definitely watch the rebuilds, and then I'll see what I like better

Ya, they went heavy with the CGI
but honestly - for the angels - then I think it actually works. It gives an un-earthly vibe to them.
but ya, I can get why some might not like it.
as for 'filler' in the show - I don't consider very much of it filler, because there aren't that many episodes - but some of the things that happen simply aren't of as nearly great importance, as others.
Like, ep 4 which is all about Shinji having run away - that's condenced down into a much shorter sequence in the movies IIRC. Stuff like that. Not wasting 30 mins of that

I think the movies are garbage compared to the show. More dumbed down and streamlined, although they do change the story after the second one. Best to view the series first, although the End of Eva movie is better than the last 2 episodes of the show.

Understandable. I think I understood the essentials of it by now, but only because I had the benefit of a HARDCORE eva fan "guiding" me through it, telling me the correct order to watch the show in order for the narrative to make most sense, and clearing a few things up the show just straight doesn't tell you. Like how Lilith just comes out of nowhere in ep 24 and is never brought up again although its like one of the most important turns in the story. The plot is littered with stuff like that xD

I guess, one of the main problems I had is that I watched the movies when I was a child :v ... (Very disturbing part of my childhood xD..)
That somehow helped me, but also confused me even more xD...

I read an article about German in Anime a million years ago... I think it's partly related to Germany being one of the central cultures of the middle ages, and anime's love for fantasy. Like SnK is probably set in alternate germany, there are many quotes from Faust in Madoka Magica, etc. Makes me kinda sad that there's no german folk hero in the Fate series.
Also yeah, I think Germany and Japan just have been on politically amiable terms for a long time.
