Hey, first of all congratulations that you dared to face subject you are unfamiliar with and posted on the Group! It's absoluely fine to paint only a fragment if you want. The aim is to learn, it's not contest of something. You challange yourself and you did great job trying it .
In creating arts, as you probably know, is a few different areas to master like form (accurate lineart/sketch), values (balance of light and shadow), color theory and composition which can be practiced in separated ways. So if one faces totally new subject and tries to execute all these areas on it, it may appear overwhelming and from my own experience I know that may be not that educative as trying step by step. So feel free, if you wish, to use another media in such cases like just pencil/liner if you see you want to practice form. When I have a problem with form sometimes I put transparent film on original photo, trace lines with whiteboard marker and place such film on my sketch to see differences. Then I remove and try again. It really helps me making corrections. It's like teacher telling you "this one is too long and this too small, look again and correct". Of course it makes sense only if you draw 1:1.
Values and composition here are quite good. You really made it looking oriental by minimalistic composition!
About colours photos are tricky because - despite they are beautiful - they steal colours. Human eye can see far more shades than photo can catch. But still even drawing from nature, not photo - it's hard to notice. So some color theory tips may do the job, even if you'll draw in different way than on photo, it should look quite good following some rules like using opposite colours for shading and neightbour colours for hues instead darker and lighter version of the same colour. Using some blue on branch and leaves would made some more depth. Flowers might have some more warmer areas and some colder. Don't hesitate to try using some colour which looks a bit off on first sight like blue on leaves as long as it's from opposite or neightbour area in colour wheel. For example green on pink flowers is triadic as I remember so won't match, but blue/violet and red/orange/yellow would do the job I think even if you can't see them on photo .
Also feel free to try this photo again if you wish (I'm going to paint aquarelle version if it so we can do together ). Seeing how other did it and "stealing" some their trick also can help I think .
Sad to head you can't continue your art class . I wonder if exchanging WIPs and commenting each step would be helpful for you. What you think?
I'm really REALLY happy having you with us . It reqiures as lot of courage to paint subject you regard as so hard for yourself! It will lead you far, just keep going .

Thanks so much for your time, great idea using the tracing as a check on how you are going, if I get time I may try it again, although I took a lot of flower photos last week and may practice by doing individual blooms, I can see with some of the entries how I can improve already. Thanks for all your support, means a lot! ππ

You did well to make a bold decision to simplify. Knowing what to leave out is half the job!

Thanks so much for your kind words Peter, it was certainly a challenge, I took a conscious decision to try and work it out for myself, and now having seen 3 other entries can see how I could have made it much easier! I will have to try some more flowers now to see if I can improve my technique, and may well pick some of yours to paint!

I think it's always nice to see somebody try to do new things, we can't really learn without such attempts ^^ Besides it's really quite good for the first time!
