I just thought of something. In the episode "Too Many Birthdays," after the ordeal of nearly losing Steven to old age, Pearl said "Gems don't age, but Steven is half-human." I think all three of them were abashed by the sudden and grim reminder that Steven has a really short existence and he will eventually die like other humans they've met...and that they will once again have to say goodbye to Rose Quartz...for good, next time.
