Chapter 8- How to tell?

Her cries echoed in the dark cellars. Sakura sat curled up, hugging her knees. She uttered another hollow cry. How could that... that snake see completely through her? He knew all her secrets, all her weak spots... And now, everything was lost.
When she was out of tears, she crept into the darkest corner and buried her head in her arms. She was about to fall asleep, but suddenly she heard footsteps. They were too light to be Orochimaru’s, and Kabuto would try to hide his presence.
When a pale face appeared behind the bars, she shrieked:
“Sasuke-kun!”
He looked at her without any expression on his face.
“Foolish girl! What are you doing here?” He sounded as cold as ever.
She quickly dried her tears. “I can ask you the same question!”
He sighed and got on his knees, so his face was on the same level as hers.
“Orochimaru sent me. It’s clear what he wants, but I’m not planning to do so.”
He took something from behind his back and showed it. The little light that reached the cellars reflected on metal. Sakura recognized the key of her cell. Her eyes grew big.
“B-but... Why would you...”
“I heard him interrogate you. It’s like you said. We were friends and teammates once. I won’t betray you.”
“If you heard that, you must’ve heard the rest too!” Did he already know?
“No, I could only hear that. It would’ve been a bit suspicious if I was found eavesdropping, y’know.”
He opened the door and Sakura came out. She felt his hand around hers, and he took her away, out of the cellars. It was so dark she couldn’t see where they went, but Sasuke was sure of his path. At last, they came outside.
The forest was dark and the moon was only a small sickle, but the stars shone brightly. And besides, ninja’s are used to operate in the night.
Sasuke let go of Sakura’s hand. She felt lonely immediately. He turned to her and said:
“You still didn’t tell me why you came here.”
She looked at his handsome face, pale like Orochimaru’s, yet so different.
“I came searching for you,” she said.
He sighed.
“Sakura, I’ve told you a thousand times before, I’m not coming back to Konoha.”
“I know. I’m not asking you to come back.”
He looked a bit surprised, but didn’t say anything. Sakura continued, looking to her feet.
“There’s something I need to tell you. Sasuke, I’m... I’m pregnant!”
She bit her lip and waited for him to speak, but he remained silent. When she dared to look at his face again, the news didn’t seem to have affected him at all. He merely raised his eyebrow.
“So what?” he said.
“So I’m having a baby!” Didn’t he understand?
“I get that! But what have I to do with that?”
She could only stare at him, dumbfounded.
“Do you want me to be godfather or something, since Naruto and I are bestest buddies in the world and all that? Or are you inviting me to your wedding?”
That was too much. She stepped back and yelled:
“How dare you say that?! What do you think I am, some hooker? It’s not Naruto’s child! That time with you was the first, the only time!”
Tears were streaming down her face.
“Sasuke...” she whispered, “It’s yours.”
He closed his eyes, and opened them again.
“Sakura...”
She looked away, ashamed of herself, but he stepped forward and embraced her.
She had expected anything but this, but she couldn’t have been happier. She answered his embrace by throwing her arms around his neck and pressing her lips against his. He kissed her back, stroking her hair, and at that moment, nothing else mattered.
They spent the rest of the night in pure bliss. There were no words, only feelings...

When he looked at her sleeping figure, carefully laid down in front of the door, he smiled.
“One day, Sakura...” He pulled a thread out of his belt and tied it around her wrist.
“One day, it’ll be a ring.”
Then he turned around and disappeared into the night again.
