This is difficult to evaluate on a computer screen. The subject is fascinating to me. As a kid I spent summers sailing on Lake Michigan and my grandfather was an able-bodied seaman in the British Merchant Navy in the 1880's. I'm pretty sure he was the contributor of the proverb "Worse things happen at sea in tall ships." to our family.

This old girl didn't simply wear out. All of the booms remain and the topsails are neatly furled. And even the ratlines (ropes along the bottom of the booms seamen stand on when handling sails) are still there. The stern superstructure is warped and bowed in ways that might have resulted from a fire. But the paint color is too consistent for that and fires usually eat up what ever isn't under water. On the other hand, What appears to be sheet metal (with the circular holes) along the safety rails could be canvas.

The combination of this hull type and sail plan says she's likely from Asia and a 'lorcha'. That's a junk like hull with European square rigged sails. Smaller commercial ships are usually more concerned with function than appearance so she could simply be a grubby working girl. Sitting out of the water could mean she's aground because she came to rest there or she's actually berthed with an anchor and the tide is out. Very interesting story three.

Critique from a consumer:
I would love to have more detail than the contrasts allow. It's a big subject but, as a looker, having a little more space around the ship would feel more natural to me, like peripheral vision was working. I'm guessing but there's most likely a lot more detail available in a larger viewing format. And that leads me to think this should be a wall sized piece. Perhaps in the waiting or conference room of a maritime law firm.

I really enjoy this image.

JOE

it looks really great in b/w, I guess far better than with colours. and I think the angle is perfect... It wouldn't look so touching if it stood straight.

I've seen this boat for real if no mistake.
I was in toronto during summer 2006 and this rusty boat must be on the left side of the road when you go to Niagara right ?

This is quite lovely. I like the angle and all that negative space around it. Was this here in Ontario? Because I have driven to Niagara Falls and on the way there we always pass by this abandoned ship. But I'm not sure if this is it or not. Anyways, beautiful work. Keep it up!

I've had a thing about pirate ships lately, ones with faces carved into them. This one has the mood and erieeness ( is that a word ) that I've felt. Excellent, I love it. Thumbs up, it inspires.

looking at this makes me dizzy
seriously. I like it, the boat looks much cool, and the b&wness makes me think of all the old photos at my nanna's...
but the tiltiness it's doing strange things to me.

something cool about a photo that induces a physical reaction

maybe i just need to go eat some food..

I think that black and white is positively perfect for a piece like this... it ages the ruins even more. How greatness easily falls.. Through any normal progression in time.. this is ultimately the end for everything... and somehow it doesn't feel hopeless or futile.. somehow this gives uncomfort of predictability. The slant is really an awesome touch... it makes me think that the thing is going to capsize any second... which strangely enough gives it life. Really nicely done sweetie and definitely worth the award it received

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 0

iamshe [2005-05-14 03:50:36 +0000 UTC]

B/W is a good choice for this...that slant is completely disturbing (in a good way). Derelict, hulking skeleton, lots of loss and history here.

Reminds me of one of *gilad ’s photos! Really it’s a shame no cloud formation was in the sky, I know how big of frustration that is, you have a great prime subject that you want to photograph, but only if the sky had formation it’d be so much nicer.

Yeah, color sometimes really affects a photo, in my opinion. I myself am a grand fanatic of color, if it doesn’t look good in color than it has to look good in B+W... B+W make photos classic, and beautiful in my opinion.

Great job nonetheless.
