BALLAD OF THE QUIET SILVER WOLF- PART 3 – Solstice Eve

Another week passed,
She and some other wolves were called
By the two judges.
The Silver Wolf glanced around at the small crowd;
The Brown Wolf was not there.
She knew what they were about to say:
That she was not good enough to play.
But that was not to be:

“Would you like to try anyway?”
Said the squat, yet towering Gray judge.

“Don’t expect a large role, though.”
Continued the lean, thin-furred White judge.

Everyone wished to try,
They didn’t care,
They wanted to play!

One the first day,
The Silver Wolf sat alone.

If you say nothing,
You cannot be judged cruelly.

Was another lesson she had learned.
Then, something caught her eye,
A bouncing brown bubble…

The Brown Wolf!
He leaped about like a mad beast,
With an ear-to-ear grin,
In front of another,
Who seemed quite grim.

A Black Wolf,
Who sort of stood out,
If you focused only on him.
He stared right through her,
But, like everyone else,
He could not see:

What makes this creature
So foreign to me?

Over time,
The three began
Talking with one another.
Turns out:
They had a lot in common!
They found the same things funny,
And they enjoyed each other’s company.

But something happened one day.
It was at the end of the performing wolves practice.
Weary from the complicated dance steps,
The Silver Wolf began to go home,
When, quite suddenly,
The happy-go-lucky Brown Wolf,
With the lightning blue eyes,
Jumped up beside her:

“Will you come
To the Solstice Eve
With me?”

The Silver Wolf was
Taken aback.
She’d always wanted to go
To the Solstice Eve!
No boy had ever asked her
To accompany her before.
After stalling for a few minutes,
In mock indecision,
With no actual thoughts in her head,
She replied:
“Sure! It’ll be fun!”

But, then she realized,
Solstice Eve was tomorrow night!
She had no flowers
To put behind her ears.
It was too late,
They had all withered away in the snow.
After arriving home,
Her mother had just the idea!

“Take your sister’s
Hanging vines,
We’ll coil them around your neck,
You’ll look so divine!”
The Silver Wolf took the decorative
Yellow plants.
She would stand out
Much to her dismay,
For they were not pink tulips,
Or pretty violets,
But she decided
That she needed no bouquet!

The day of the festival
Finally came.
Oh, how nervous our silver friend was!
Frogs leapt in her stomach,
Butterfly wings tickled her throat.

Oh! There he is!
She spotted him amongst the
Joyful crowd.
He carried a red rose,
As was the rule,
And placed it at her paws.
The blue eyes stared into hers.
“Yellow? Very nice.”

Yes! She was accepted!
The Silver Wolf thanked her mother silently.
She and the Brown Wolf
Danced in the light of the full moon.
But, something set her off,
She was having too much fun to
Mention it:

He smells like fish.

When she told him that it was making her sick,
He took a big swig of
The sweetened water they served.
Now, he smelt like sweet fish,
Which wasn’t as delightful as it sounds.
It made the Silver Wolf
Feel worse.
Her stomach groaned,
She wanted to go home.
Her head ached,
Her paws were sore,
But she couldn’t leave
The Brown Wolf all alone!
She stayed
For 30 minutes more,
Until the pain became
Too much to bear.
The Brown Wolf
Escorted her home.
With an affectionate hug,
He bid her farewell.

Apart from her upset stomach,
The Silver Wolf had had fun!
She threw herself in bed,
Feeling better already,
She thought:

So, that’s the Solstice Eve!
I must plan to go again.

She drifted off to sleep,
With dreams of red roses
And thoughts of the blue eyes
Running through her head.
