It's not as crack as it seems. In IDW comics Starswirl had cheery, a little random personality and I think that in one of early issues of FiM (the main issue course, somewhere before issue 20 I think) Luna said that Starswirl was kinda like "this one" (pointing at Pinkie). So while in the show canon it's a crack ship it is kinda legitimate in the comic canon.
