Description Karkat Vantas, malblood, was in a hurry.
He had been waiting for this day for over a month now, and he knew exactly how he hoped it would happen.
Concealed behind his cold red eyes was a smile. Today he was meeting with his girlfriend.
The loud gongs that awoke Karkat every morning at six past sunrise had not yet sounded. It was barely sunrise yet.
If Karkat was caught awake at this hour, he'd be punished for sure. But this wasn't his concern.
Karkat was used to the stricts laws and harsh punishment.
That's what life was like for the Malbloods, in the kindom of Alternia.
Karkat pulled a bright red tunic over a white undershirt, the bright red loudly displaying the Paysan insignia, the district in which all malbloods lived.
Karkat pulled on a pair of cheap leather boots, and swung his satchel over his shoulder. With that, Karkat carefully slid his room window open, and climbed out onto the pavement. The buildings that malbloods lived in, or deformed bloods more specifically, were made of hard packed clay.
On lowest possible place in the hemospectrum, malbloods were of little interest. Karkat often thought of walking up to the queen herself and punching her in the face.
The buildings had long fabric tarps down the sides, as a form of rain shelter.
This was to Karkat's advantage.
He bent over and pulled on the toes of his boots, revealing two sharp blades that peeked out of his boots like silent killers.
With this, Karkat nimbly lodged his feet in the tarp, got a good hold on the fabric, and began to quickly climb his way up the side of the building.
The building wasn't very tall, so he was able to scale it easily.
He climbed over the edge and quickly got his bearings.
Karkat looked over the edge, and saw rooftop upon clay rooftop, with a dark blue canvas like sky and pink hues of first sunlight peeking out behind the buildings.
Karkat had no time to study scenery.
The redblood leapt from the building the the next close one, and to the next.
From rooftop to rooftop he leapt, feeling the cool breeze running through his black hair, until he landed on the one he was looking for. Karkat sat at the edge of the building and waited.
He reached into his satchel and fingered the item nervously.
As he began to daze off into a daydream, a voice snuck up behind him.

"I'm sorry I'm late."

Karkat jumped.

"Jeez, Aradia! You almost knocked me off!"

The girl with long ebony hair sat down next to Karkat on the rooftop, and swung her booted feet back and forth. She smirked.

"But, your the all powerful Karkat Vantas! You can't fall off of anything!"

Karkat scoffed.

"All powerful my ass. Even you'r higher blood than me. I'm a malblood, you'r a paysblood."

Karkat tugged on Aradia's maroon tunic, the blood color of the Paysbloods, of which Aradia was, also called the Roturia district.
Aradia grabbed Karkat's hand off of her tunic, and squeezed it.

"I don't care about my stupid blood color, Karkat. I care about you."

Karkat blushed.
He had been with Aradia for months now, and she was still able to make him blush. Karkat reached into his satchel, and pulled out a cloth wrapped parcel.

"I brought a treat."

Aradia took the parcel and unwrapped it, to reveal a golden sticky honeycomb.
Aradia almost dropped it.

"How did you get your hands on this?"

She broke the honeycomb in half, and handed Karkat a piece.

"I had to pull a few strings, and save my credits for the past few weeks."

Aradia licked honey off her thumb, and leaned over to kiss Karkat on the cheek.

Karkat's face turned scarlet once again.

He shoved the golden honey into his mouth, and leaned back onto the roof savoring the taste and running his tongue through it.

Karkat licked the last of the the honey from his fingers.
He reached back into his satchel, and took a deep breath.

Its now.. or never.

Karkat pulled out a small ring box, and turned to Aradia.

"Hey.. Aradia?"

Aradia turned to him.

"Mmm?"

"There's something I want to tell you."

"What is it Karkat?"

Karkat gulped.

"Well.. its like this... I... I mean.. Will you-"

Karkat was cut off, when he heard the piercing bang of gunfire.

And then Aradia fell.

"Aradia!"

Karkat turned, and saw a soldier in a bright fuchsia uniform, holding up a gun.
A soldier of the queen.

Karkat forgot about breathing, about living, as his world crashed down in front of him.

Aradia lied collapsed on the side of the roof, maroon blood seeping out of a bullet wound in her back, dark brown eyes still open wide.

Karkat turned on the soldier in a hot rage.

"YOU BASTARD!"

He dashed towards the soldier, but to no avail.
The fuchsia dressed man kicked Karkat in the stomach, and lifted him by the feet.
Karkat cried out in pain.

"I will not take such impudence from a mutant blood. Being out at early hours results in punishment to the furthest extent of the law."

Karkat remembered barely anything after that.

He remembered delivering a blow the the soldiers face, and leaping from the rooftops. He remembered escaping, and running down the street. Not caring where he was going, or where he came from.
Only the picture of Aradia's lifeless body painted his mind, as red tears streamed down his face. Eventually he broke down and collapsed onto the street.
His mind ran wild.

Why? Why her? It should have been me.. god damn it!

He remembered going back later that day, and finding her body.
And carrying her home. Just like he had planned to do.
And he had buried her, in the few feet of land behind his house.

And then that was it.

And Karkat Vantas was broken.
