Late response, but I'm still surprised as I was when you first told me he's one of the few characters in Tekken you like.
I guess part of the reason is since not only is he one of the few good characters even if he's not a particularly "effective hero"... he's also not just some untrained idjit either (I can't think of many bikers in fiction that are also Judo and Karate experts).

well to be fair too when tekken three came out i had no idea of his background. and most of the background of him I knew was him being law's friend, not that he was a moron. though i guess they kinda' turned both of them into morons, but morons who are particularly well off when it comes to fighting.

Off-topic, but reading the Tekken wiki... his original backstory was a lot more messed up than I ever thought, though they seemingly retconned the "cannibalism to survive" bit later.
As the wiki described it, Version One: As he was a kickboxing practitioner, Bruce went to Thailand to compete in a Muay Thai Kickboxing tournament, and his performance destroyed the former popular champion's hopes of ever returning, and as a result, a Muay Thai gambling organization put out a contract on Bruce's life.
While onboard a returning flight home, the contract killer attempted to take Bruce's life, but an investigator of Hong Kong's International Police force, who was also on the flight, thwarted his efforts. A fight ensued and when it was over the plane went down.
A unit from Kazuya's facilities later rescued Bruce, who had been surviving off of human remains for several months.π: 0 β©: 1
huh. hadn't been aware of his backstory but it's interesting. not sure why they remove the final part since it's not exactly a thing of choice on bruce's part.

I don't know myself. I wonder if they figured it was pointlessly dark compared to the overall tone of Tekken's plot at the time, though the last two main games (6 and 7) seem to have a serious case of mood whiplash themselves (you have both serious martial artists with nothing funny about them and utter goofs fighting each other).

yeah. my main problem i've always had with tekken is there's no clear hero but the villains seem fairly clear. (I mean even under claims of saving the world, a war that causes the loss of life in the billions isn't forgiveable.)
