Based on the newly revealed Cave lion cub found in the permafrost of a cave. Cave Lions likely preyed on Cave Bears. If I had to guess why cave lions appeared darker than their african cousins I'd have to guess that it would help them stay warm. Darker colors absorb more heat from the sun than lighter colors. Their shade of fur color would also not matter if they were nocturnal like their African cousins. That's just a guess though.

Here is a link to pictures of the revealed lion cub. The cub is displayed upside down from how it sat for thousands of years, hence why it looks sort of pancaked.

The tear streaks I got from the Chauvet cave paintings which show a handful of lions which all have some form of streaks going down from their eyes.
