Or at least that's the first thing that came to mind when I saw this.
I really really like his design for the space AU though, I think that it really brings that character together with the whole replacing of body parts.

Very possessive, not because of time.
He's not the 'right' kind of alien to be a pilot, but got to that place by bodymods, skills, determination and creative amputation.Β
The right kind normally used, is pretty much a type of lab grown alien, they are naturals to simple piloting, bred and modified to be the universal standard for bigger ships.
also they have a very strict union.
Most places wouldn't hire him, or let him pilot a ship at all, but he convinced his employer that he'd do both maintenance and piloting, making himself a little more valuable.
And not having to pay as much, since he isnt of the union. CadeΒ doesn't want to disappoint, and also helps keep the costs down.Β
